Hitler on Trial: Alan Cranston, Mein Kampf, and The Court of World Opinion

by Lorraine Tong

Before the Internet, Pursuing the Truth about Adolf Hitler and Mein Kampf In 1939, a 24-year old American journalist, recently returned to New York City from Europe, discovers that Adolf Hitler’s Mein Kampf—as published in the United States—is sanitized. Using Hitler’s own words from the original Nazi manifesto, he translates and writes an annotated condensed edition to expose the full measure of Hitler’s evil ideology, chilling anti-Semitism, and plans for world domination. The American publisher of Mein Kampf sues for copyright infringement.  This short historical non-fiction book is about the people and events that shaped the young journalist’s life. It recounts his determined pursuit of the truth to alert Americans and the world to the danger six months before Hitler’s...

DONALD TRUMP: Who Is Donald Trump? Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton's Race To The White House

by Michael Brixton

As the 2016 election bears down on us there are two potential candidates that stand out far more than the rest. One is a member of a political dynasty that has had a member of the family either in office or running for office almost nonstop since the 1970’s. Hillary Clinton has been working up to the Presidency for quite a long time and her resume is longer and more robust than perhaps any other candidate.

Donald Trump on the other hand has a resume of a completely different kind. A self made billionaire that lives by his own rules. He wants to take on the establishment. Being worth billions of dollars he doesn’t have to sit down with any major campaign contributor. He doesn’t have to take notes with campaign staff members to make sure that his talking points match the r...

Roadside Strangler

by Jasmine Grey

When one envisions a serial killer, they think of a cold, calculating, heartless monster. As humans, some of us have developed ways to recognize other humans that are looking to cause us harm. If we look at a mug shot of famous another serial killer, like Charles Manson or Jeffery Dahmer, one could say that these men “look” like serial killers. Maybe it’s because of their wild eyes, the way that they hold themselves, or the “creepy” feeling one receives from their presence. These factors are enough to make a person stay as far away from the killer as possible, but sadly, not all predators come with a warning sign. Michael Bruce Ross, later to be known as the Roadside Strangler, was a ruthless predator that slipped under the radars of the multiple women that he attacked, raped, an...

A Philosophical Examination of Social Justice and Child Poverty

by G. Schweiger

This book is open access under a CCBY license.   Child poverty is one of the biggest challenges of today, harming millions of children. In this book, it is investigated from a philosophical social justice perspective, primarily in the context of modern welfare states. Based on both normative theory (particularly the capability approach) and empirical evidence, the authors identify the injustices of child poverty, showing how it negatively affects the well-being of children as well as their whole life course. But child poverty is not 'given by nature'. It is avoidable and there is certainly the moral duty to alleviate it. Therefore, Graf and Schweiger develop a normative theory of responsibilities, which clarifies the moral role of different agents in the poor child's environment – the f...

Intimate Japan: Ethnographies of Closeness and Conflict

by Allison Alexy

How do couples build intimacy in an era that valorizes independence and self-responsibility? How can a man be a good husband when full-time jobs are scarce? How can unmarried women find fulfillment and recognition outside of normative relationships? How can a person express their sexuality when there is no terminology that feels right? In contemporary Japan, broad social transformations are reflected and refracted in changing intimate relationships. As the Japanese population ages, the low birth rate shrinks the population, and decades of recession radically restructure labor markets, Japanese intimate relationships, norms, and ideals are concurrently shifting. This volume explores a broad range of intimate practices in Japan in the first decades of the 2000s to trace how social change is b...

Mentoring and Educational Outcomes of Black Graduate Students

by Nicole Sullivan

The purpose of this research is to examine the ways in which mentoring affects black graduate students’ completion of programs of study. Performance is measured by completion of their graduate program, length of time taken to complete the program, grade point average (GPA), and overall attitude about their graduate school experience. On average, over half of all black graduate students leave their programs of study before completion compared to 25% attrition (non-completion of program of study) of white students.
A review of the literature suggests that any form of mentoring improves completion rates among black graduate students. Existing research further suggests that when paired with like mentors, such as same race or gender, black graduate students complete their programs at e...

MY COMMUNIST CHILDHOOD

by George Demian, IVAN

A flash into a dark past, of which we paradoxally keep nostalgic memories , because it is about the most beautiful part of anyone’s life – our lost youth. Because it takes us back to our true selves for a little while, this book deserves to be read. This book does not in any way aim to be a political radiography, an in-depth analysis of the Romanian political and social system during the communist period. It is a book of stories, of reality seen through a child's eyes....

Pragmatism as Post-Postmodernism: Lessons from John Dewey (American Philosophy)

by Larry A. Hickman

Larry A. Hickman presents John Dewey as very much at home in the busy mix of contemporary philosophy—as a thinker whose work now, more than fifty years after his death, still furnishes fresh insights into cutting-edge philosophical debates. Hickman argues that it is precisely the rich, pluralistic mix of contemporary philosophical discourse, with its competing research programs in French-inspired postmodernism, phenomenology, Critical Theory, Heidegger studies, analytic philosophy, and neopragmatism—all busily engaging, challenging, and informing one another—that invites renewed examination of Dewey’s central ideas.Hickman offers a Dewey who both anticipated some of the central insights of French-inspired postmodernism and, if he were alive today, would certainly be one of its most...

Drinking in Victorian and Edwardian Britain: Beyond the Spectre of the Drunkard

by Thora Hands

This open access book surveys drinking in Britain between the Licensing Act of 1869 and the wartime regulations imposed on alcohol production and consumption after 1914. This was a period marked by the expansion of the drink industry and by increasingly restrictive licensing laws. Politics and commerce co-existed with moral and medical concerns about drunkenness and combined, these factors pushed alcohol consumers into the public spotlight. Through an analysis of public and private records, medical texts and sociological studies, the book investigates the reasons why Victorians and Edwardians consumed alcohol in the ways that they did and explores the ideas about alcohol that circulated in the period.  This book shows that they had many reasons for purchasing and consuming alcoholic subst...

Mexican immigration to the USA: [IMMIGRATION HISTORY AND ITS EFFECTS ON THE U.S. ECONOMY]

by Gregory March

Illegal immigration to the United States is the unlawful entry of foreign nationals into the United States, and the remaining in the country of admitted foreign nationals after the expiration of their U.S. visas or parole documents. Earlier naturalization laws were followed by the 1875 and 1882 Acts prohibiting Chinese immigrants. A 1906 act required immigrants to learn English in order to become citizens, and a 1917 act defined aliens with a long list of undesirables, including most Asians. The U.S. had otherwise nearly open borders until the early 20th century, with only 1% rejected from 1890-1924. A 1924 act established visa requirements and enacted quotas for immigrants from specific countries, especially targeting Italians and Eastern Europeans. In response to the September 11 attacks,...
