Carnival

by Joan Colby

CARNIVAL celebrates the quirky, the odd, and an audience of participants and voyeurs. The first section contains linked poems that focus on small towns’ annual festivals. The second, “Sideshows,” looks at fictional, mythic, and real characters from a speculative angle. The third, “The Traveling Circus,” centers on one of mankind’s oldest entertainments. CARNIVAL unleashes a vibrant and revolutionary spirit in poems that favor a skewed vision: sometimes effervescent, often dark....

The Faerie Queene [Annotated] (The Reader's Library Book 16)

by Edmund Spenser

Edmund Spenser (1552?-1599) was an English Renaissance poet often considered to be the foremost poet of his time by many of his contemporaries. His early career, much like Virgil's, was spent writing pastoral and elegiac verse, but The Faerie Queene is his masterpiece, an unfinished allegorical epic intended to depict Aristotle's twelve moral virtues (twelve also being the number of books subsequently divided into twelve cantos for a proper epic), though he was only able to finish six. The poem is written entirely in what has come to be known as the Spenserian stanza: nine lines, eight of iambic pentameter followed by one of iambic hexameter rhyming ababbcbcc. The fairy queen, Gloriana, represents the glory of heaven and Queen Elizabeth I simultaneously. She is holding her twelve-day feast...

Home-Sick of Home: A Poet's Journey to Find and Redefine Home

by Jeffrey Pierre

Home-Sick of Home is a poetry collection that delves into the meaning of home. The home that the poet is trying to find and redefine throughout the book is not necessarily a physical place but a mental state. This book is a snapshot of the poet's journey to self-discovery; the road to self-discovery is about finding yourself while simultaneously creating who you are....

My Favorite Houseguest

by Mike James

Take a little bit of Berrigan’s SONNETS, a little bit of Kerouac’s BOOK OF DREAMS, throw in a dash of SPOON RIVER, and then sprinkle with a healthy dose of Saturday matinees and 70s game shows. Do all that and you’ll come close to the recpe for this delightful collection of portrait and persona poems. With subjects that range from the very well known (John Wayne, Elvis), to the not as well known (Sal Mineo, Stan Brakhage), to the fairly obscure (Willard Maas, Alfred Starr Hamilton), the poet offers characters who are so human that their concerns, interests, kinks, and belly laughs are timeless....

House You Cannot Reach

by Tom Daley

In HOUSE YOU CANNOT REACH, a mother’s voice is reimagined, amplified, and permitted to ventilate both forbidden grievance and private passion. Simultaneously wistful and excoriating, she cherishes and denounces a philandering husband and ponders the suicide of her youngest son. Whether needling a portfolio manager or reconnoitering the disappointing God of her Irish Catholic upbringing, she casts her sometimes witty, sometimes jaded regard on a society that pampered and grieved her.

After a stroke, her restraint loosens even more radically. Her consciousness splinters as she proceeds to cajole the Virgin of Guadalupe, to hallucinate over Tolstoy’s War and Peace, and to brazenly equate her addled suffering with that of earthquake victims in Haiti.

Poetry for Positive Spirit: A collection of poems from famous poets to cheer up the spirit

by Rabindranath Tagore

There are times when one wants to be alone, or in the company of the chosen few. Poetry is the perfect companion of that person who wants his or her spirit to be lifted up. Soul stirring poetry is rare and it is a great companion of a sensitive soul. A great poet or poetess brings out a worldly experience in such a positive manner that the reader get submerged in that blissful world that poet creates.
Here is a small attempt to collect the sensitive poetry that would bring cheer to the sensitive soul who wants to experience the bliss that can be only generated by the calmed emotions of soulful poetry.
Some of these poems are rightfully very well known for our generation. They are reproduced here since they still continue to motivate a tired soul. Some are not so well known bu...

Early Echoes

by Carol Frith

In this collection, the “early echoes” are the isolating sirens of patrol cars and ambulances in the darkness, along with poems of morning glories in urban alleyways, of seedy coffee shops and neglected stone fountains in vacant back yards. These poems explore the present by reworking it in terms of the past. Sonnets and villanelles alternate with free verse as present and past subsume and modify the solitary echoes of experience lived and reworded, abbreviated and re-amplified. Experience in these poems is concentric rather than linear, echoes of circles and spheres, of repetitions and refrains. The subject matter is time—self-referential hours and decades, time at once alternating and static, cyclic and monolithic, alienating and echoing, time circular and frozen as stone....

Echoes of War Volume 2: Remembering Those Who Served

by Robert Longley

Echoes of War volume 2 is a collection of inspirational poems for Gold Star Families. Each poem is dedicated to the memory of one or more military service members. Where applicable the name, rank, date and location are included. I recommend you look up some of these individuals to learn more about their stories. While most of the poems were written for service members from the Gulf War to the present, there is one from World War I and several from World War II, Korea and Vietnam. While not exclusive, I've tried to include as many Medal of Honor recipients as possible....

Happenings, Heartbeats, and Mental Breakdowns: Poems

by M. B. Manthe

Sometimes I think summer has its ownpattern after all, some weirdly repeatedseries of actions, happenings, heartbeats, and mental breakdowns. These are the first lines of “Road Work,” the poem that opens this collection and sets the tone for the rest of the book. The poems are personal, emotional, and sometimes confessional, but Manthe always strives to engage readers’ minds as well as their hearts. Many of the poems reflect the author’s lifelong struggle with depression, and others who have experienced the isolation that often comes with mental illness might find a little comfort and a sense of familiarity in these pages. There are lighter moments, too: follow the nervous driver of “Nighttime on 95,” enjoy a snack of “Apples and Hot Chocolate,” and watch the speaker become fi...

Spring Delusions: Chaotic Poems of Despair and Blooming Hope

by Zahra Ammar

Words are our only tools to express the physicality of the chaos in our minds.
It is tedious and painstaking process to create something, anything. Emotions are not words, hence, to put them as such, requires quite a bit of searching, meandering and stumbling. I believe my affair with these alphabets will never be satiated. Yet, I have tried to sing some broken tunes, sketched some bleakness and shared fragments of my inner hope.
I have often had a love hate relationship with poetry. Its enigmatic power has often left me confused but also enlightened me. Although rhymes are fun and easy to tap your foot to, it is the rhythm or sometimes, the lack of it that can truly sear through the heart. For me, simplicity is key. It is graceful. It is alluring.
Each poem is handwri...

A Stranger's Table

by Anne Brooke

A poetry collection focusing on the strangeness of everyday life, and how even the simplest of objects or events can help us see with fresh eyes. An old table can be the entry to an unexplored history, a film can take us on a journey we never planned, and an infestation of wasps can turn into a war we never asked to fight.

Reviews:

"There are lovely poems in Anne Brooke's A Stranger's Table … this is a book that (along with many by more famous poets) gives the lie to the idea that self-publication should be shameful." (From a review at Galatea Resurrects Reviews)...
