One Hundred Years of Chemical Warfare: Research, Deployment, Consequences

by Bretislav Friedrich

This book is open access under a CC BY-NC 2.5 license. On April 22, 1915, the German military released 150 tons of chlorine gas at Ypres, Belgium. This chemical attack, which amounted to the first use of a weapon of mass destruction, marks a turning point in world history. The preparation as well as the execution of the gas attack was orchestrated by Fritz Haber, the director of the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Physical Chemistry and Electrochemistry in Berlin-Dahlem. During World War I, Haber transformed his research institute into a center for the development of chemical weapons (and of the means of protection agains...

This book is open access under a CC BY license. This book offers a unique and insightful analysis of Western and Middle Eastern concepts of dignity and illustrates them with examples of everyday life.Dignity in the 21st Century - Middle East and West is unique and insightful for a range of reasons. Stories about Human History: Travels on the history of mankind

by Sarah B. Williams

The version of ancient and medieval history known to us today is not a self-evident thing. It is the result of the painstaking work of medieval historians who tried to restore the true picture of the past. However, the scheme created by them is by no means indisputable. At the same time, the majority of our contemporaries, brought up at school and university history courses, are convinced that the restoration of past events is not difficult in principle.Every day brings scientific sensations that contradict our ideas about life. Recent archaeological finds refute history books. The latest discoveries of astronomers completely break the knowledge of the universe. And the achievements of biologists are destroying, it would seem, unshakable truths even about life and death. Whether we like it...

The Great Depression and the New Deal: Core Documents

by John Moser

This collection of documents on the Depression and New Deal is the second volume in an extended series of document collections from the Ashbrook Center that will cover major periods, themes, and institutions in American history and government. The series began with a collection on the Founding. This volume follows appropriately, because it makes clear the reasons why and the degree to which Franklin Roosevelt intended the New Deal to be a re-founding of the American republic. In presenting the words that Roosevelt spoke, the collection shows us not only his arguments but his masterful rhetoric, which presented the New Deal as only an updating of the Founding. The collection presents as well the arguments of those who opposed the New Deal — Democrats as well as Republicans — and those w...

Keep It Moving?: Conserving Kinetic Art (Symposium Proceedings)

by Rachel Rivenc

Kinetic art not only includes movement but often depends on it to produce an intended effect and therefore fully realize its nature as art. It can take a multiplicity of forms and include a wide range of motion, from motorized and electrically driven movement to motion as the result of wind, light, or other sources of energy. Kinetic art emerged throughout the twentieth century and had its major developments in the 1950s and 1960s.  Professionals responsible for conserving contemporary art are in the midst of rethinking the concept of authenticity and solving the dichotomy often felt between original materials and functionality of the work of art. The contrast is especially acute with kinetic art when a compromise between the two often seems impossible. Also to be considered are issues o...
