Punishing the Criminal Corpse, 1700-1840: Aggravated Forms of the Death Penalty in England (Palgrave Historical Studies in the Criminal Corpse and its Afterlife)

by Peter King

This book is open access under a CC BY 4.0 licence. This book analyses the different types of post-execution punishments and other aggravated execution practices, the reasons why they were advocated, and the decision, enshrined in the Murder Act of 1752, to make two post-execution punishments, dissection and gibbeting, an integral part of sentences for murder. It traces the origins of the Act, and then explores the ways in which Act was actually put into practice. After identifying the dominance of penal dissection throughout the period, it looks at the abandonment of burning at the stake in the 1790s, the rapid decline of hanging in chains just after 1800, and the final abandonment of both dissection and gibbeting in 1832 and 1834. It concludes that the Act, by creating differentiation in...

Memoir of Col. Benjamin Tallmadge

by Benjamin Tallmadge

Guerilla, rebel, politician, spy—Col. Benjamin Tallmadge lived one of the most remarkable lives of the American Revolution When British troops defeated the Continental Army on Long Island, Gen. George Washington was forced to abandon New York in order to save the revolution. The British established their headquarters in New York City, beginning an occupation that would last the length of the war. Priceless intelligence flowed through the city’s harbor, and Washington wanted to claim it as his own. True Crime Stories: A Prequel: 4 Shocking True Crime Cases

by Jack Rosewood

There are killers who stalk their prey, learning all they can about an intended target before striking. Some commit the act of murder out of hatred or revenge for someone in their lives. Killers like Detlev Guenzel searched for like-minded souls who would allow them to indulge in their deepest darkest fantasies. Then of course, there are those who brutally murder for no apparent reason whatsoever. Each of the four true crime murder cases in this true crime anthology are all different from each other in many ways. The wife who was cast aside for a much younger model; the vore who sought out a willing participant in the act of consensual homicide and cannibalism; the young man who butchered his elderly neighbours; and the man whose partners either disappeared or turned up dead over the perio...

Spanish American War: A History From Beginning to End

by Hourly History

Spanish-American War
“A splendid little war “- that’s how one contemporary observer described the Spanish-American War, a war that is arguably one of the most important wars ever fought. The duration was short and the victory decisive, thus little and splendid, the latter, at least, from the victor’s point of view. The impacts of the war, however, were anything but little. In fact, the aftermath of the Spanish-American War is still affecting global affairs today. The dominant superpowers of 1898 watched as a new player on the international scene, the United States, shifted its ideology from isolationism to expansionism, and emerged as a force to reckoned with, a true superpower.

Byblos: The History and Legacy of the Oldest Ancient Phoenician City

by Charles River Editors

*Includes pictures*Includes ancient accounts of Byblos*Includes online resources and a bibliography for further reading*Includes a table of contentsOf all the peoples of the ancient Near East, the Phoenicians are among the most recognizable but also perhaps the least understood. The Phoenicians never built an empire like the Egyptians and Assyrians; in fact, the Phoenicians never created a unified Phoenician state but instead existed as independent city-state kingdoms scattered throughout the Mediterranean region. However, despite the fact there was never a “Phoenician Empire,” the Phoenicians proved to be more prolific in their exploration and colonization than any other peoples in world history until the Spanish during the Age of Discovery. Byblos, known today as Jubayl, has been kno...

State of Conflict

"The art of war is of vital importance to the State. It is a matter of life and death, a road either to safety or to ruin. Hence it is a subject of inquiry which can on no account be neglected."
– Sun Tzu, the Art of War
For many, the Civil War is about home, family and defending a way of life. Ezekiel Hampton understands this well, he is an orphan. Given a new life by forgotten Americans, Zeke fights for his home and the Union as the War Between the States comes to California.
Inspired by historic events, State of Conflict chronicles A Company of the 1st California Cavalry as Texans attempt to seize Fort Yuma and declaw the Golden Bear.

The Disappearance of Shinya Matsuoka
In 2002, North Korea admitted that it used secret agents to abduct Japanese citizens from Japan and Europe during the 1970s and 1980s. While the Japanese government only recognizes 17 missing people as having been kidnapped by North Korean spies, others believe the real number of victims might be in the hundreds. Could Shinya Matsuoka, a 4-year-old boy who vanished from Tokushima Prefecture without a trace in 1989, be one of the uncounted victims?

Executing Magic in the Modern Era: Criminal Bodies and the Gallows in Popular Medicine (Palgrave Historical Studies in the Criminal Corpse and its Afterlife)

by Owen Davies

This book is open access under a CC BY 4.0 licenseThis book explores the magical and medical history of executions from the eighteenth to the early twentieth century by looking at the afterlife potency of criminal corpses, the healing activities of the executioner, and the magic of the gallows site. The use of corpses in medicine and magic has been recorded back into antiquity. The lacerated bodies of Roman gladiators were used as a source of curative blood, for instance. In early modern Europe, a great trade opened up in ancient Egyptian mummies and the fat of executed criminals, plundered as medicinal cure-alls. However, this is the first book to consider the demand for the blood of the executed, the desire for human fat, the resort to the hanged man’s hand, and the trade in hanging ro...

Investigating the Body in the Victorian Asylum: Doctors, Patients, and Practices (Mental Health in Historical Perspective)

by Jennifer Wallis

This book is open access under a CC BY 4.0 license. This book explores how the body was investigated in the late nineteenth-century asylum in Britain. As more and more Victorian asylum doctors looked to the bodily fabric to reveal the ‘truth’ of mental disease, a whole host of techniques and technologies were brought to bear upon the patient's body. These practices encompassed the clinical and the pathological, from testing the patient's reflexes to dissecting the brain. Investigating the Body in the Victorian Asylum takes a unique approach to the topic, conducting a chapter-by-chapter dissection of the body. It considers how asylum doctors viewed and investigated the skin, muscles, bones, brain, and bodily fluids. The book demonstrates the importance of the body in nineteenth-century ...

Edward I

by Robert Seeley

On the night of June 17 - 18, 1239, Queen Eleanor, the consort of Henry the Third, presented her husband with a son, who was born in the Palace of Westminster, and who was instantly, says the old chronicler, named by the king, "Edward, after the glorious king and confessor, whose body rests in the church of St. Peter," immediately adjoining. The event was greeted by the nobles and by the people of London with great manifestations of joy: by the citizens more especially, because the young prince was born among them. The streets of the city were illuminated at night with large lanterns, and music and dancing marked it as a day of general rejoicing....
