State of Conflict

by Mark Hess

"The art of war is of vital importance to the State. It is a matter of life and death, a road either to safety or to ruin. Hence it is a subject of inquiry which can on no account be neglected."
– Sun Tzu, the Art of War
For many, the Civil War is about home, family and defending a way of life. Ezekiel Hampton understands this well, he is an orphan. Given a new life by forgotten Americans, Zeke fights for his home and the Union as the War Between the States comes to California.
Inspired by historic events, State of Conflict chronicles A Company of the 1st California Cavalry as Texans attempt to seize Fort Yuma and declaw the Golden Bear.

Following intervention by the British government he was eventually released from prison in Cadiz, from where he journeyed back to England and on to America to join the...
