The diary of an average runner: Never, ever, give up

by Mark cameron

Oh no I hear you sigh, another book promoting from fat to thin, from unfit coach potato to elite athlete, from don't do this to you must do that ! I can assure you the purpose of this book is none of those. I hope this is actually a little deeper than that, looking into why we do things, what kind of people we are, questioning what is the purpose of the things that we do.

This book is a year in my life centered around running, why I took it up, what did I experience, and what did I achieve at the end of it. Some of it is personal, some a little spiritual, some hopefully motivational, perhaps in places a little shallow - but then that sums up how I am !

The end goal of this isn't to encourage others to run; it's to share my experiences and to encourage others to ...

Autobiography of an English Baby Boomer

by Mike Newton

When I investigated my family tree and went back to about 1805, I realised that all you could learn about my ascendants was how they were related, where they were born and their occupation every 10 years. It would have been much more interesting if some of them had written about their life.
I was prompted to write my autobiography and have completed it until the age of 65 - hopefully there will be more to add. The aim of it is to pass down information about myself to my future descendants and is aimed at my grandchildren, great grandchildren etc, and I kept in my mind it being read in 100 years time. I asked my two sons if they would be interested in reading my autobiography and they answered in the affirmative. However after sending them my version up to the age of 63 two years ago,...

Life and Times of a Left-Handed Tweener

by Stephen Sulkin

Having been born in 1944, I have always assumed I was part of the "Boomer Generation." However, it turns out that the Boomers started in 1945! So, technically, I guess, I am part of the "Silent Generation," so-called, as I understand it, because our experiences in the Second World War were so tragic and horrifying that we don't like to talk about them. However, given the fact that when the war ended, I was only one year old, I doubt I'd have much to say about it anyway. So, it's a stretch to claim membership in the "Greatest Generation," nor can I claim to be part of the Boomers. Caught in the middle: a "Tweener." To add insult to injury, I am left-handed: a Left-Handed Tweener! Not only can I not use a can opener efficiently, but I can't whine about it as a self-absorbed Boomer. As a...

Broken Brain: Surviving Near-Fatal Brain Trauma

by W.R. Heustis

It was death defying. I shouldn’t be here. The doctors said I should have died. Considering the severity of my skull fracture, accompanying concussion, and consequential troubling abscess, I should have been a goner. I was barely past my first birthday when it happened. My father said that, apparently, I had just gotten my one-year inoculations. Something about them, however, set me off—and badly. As a result, I was evidently overly fussy due to one of the drug’s impact on my small body. I was in my highchair and angrily pushed my little legs firmly against the dining room table. I essentially propelled myself backward. My still pliable head struck the hard wooden floor. The floor was okay; my head wasn’t. The impact fractured my skull and I went Humpty Dumpty on my soon frantic pa...
