Enterprise IoT: A Definitive Handbook

by Navveen Balani

The fourth edition of the Enterprise IoT book is out now. The most comprehensive guide on understanding Enterprise IoT and how to implement IoT applications using IoT cloud offerings from Microsoft, IBM, Amazon, GE Predix and open source software. “Internet of Things is a vision where every object in the world has the potential to connect to the Internet and provide their data so as to derive actionable insights on its own or through other connected objects“The object can be anything – a vehicle, machinery, airport, city, people, phone or even a shoe. From a connected vehicle solution, you can understand the driver behaviour and vehicle usage patterns, from a connected machines solution you can determine when do machines need servicing, from a connected airport solution you can understand many things like - how much time the passenger needs to wait for check-in and security, from an operating perspective it could help to optimize the passenger movement and ensure the right equipments are available at the right time to ensure quick serviceability and finally say, from a connected footwear solution you can understand how much you have run so far and your app can automatically purchase a new pair of shoes based on the remaining shoe life.As we can see, it’s not just about connectivity, but how to use the connected data in context of your application or for that matter other connected solutions to derive insights which can’t be uncovered before. Today we are seeing data (both structured and unstructured) growing by leaps and bounds available through mediums like blogs, social media, transactional systems etc. With advent of IoT, you will see a large volume of raw data emitting from devices like sensors. Such huge and complex set of data, if not attended to, can go wasted and opportunity lost in terms of building smart environment around us. While focusing on issue of addressing this web of complexity, often understanding the real benefit of IoT is lost and most importantly how to get started on IoT.In this book, our focus will be to provide a clear vision on Internet of Things and everything you should know to get started on applying and building Enterprise IoT applications in any industry. The concepts listed down in the book are applicable across industries. Till date, it’s difficult to find a single perspective of what does an Enterprise IoT stack actually mean and our intent is to provide an applicability guide that can be taken as reference for building any IoT application. In the course of the book, we would describe some of the key components of Internet of Things through our Enterprise IoT stack. We would look at how to incrementally apply IoT transformations to build connected products in various industries. At the end, we would understand the technical strategy and how to build IoT applications using IoT cloud offerings from Microsoft, IBM, Amazon and Predix and even build one using open source technologies. To summarize, as part of the book we would cover the following - •A detail overview of key components of Internet of Things and most comprehensive view of an Enterprise IoT stack.•How to apply IoT in context of real world applications by covering detailed use cases on manufacturing, automotive and home automation.•Understand the technical strategy and how to implement IoT applications using Microsoft, IBM , Amazon and Predix IoT offerings and various open source technologies and map it to our Enterprise IoT Stack.

The Martian Engineer's Notebook, Volume 1

by Eric Nabity

Science and Engineering are inherently dramatic enterprises. Initial impressions of how something should work are often inaccurate. First attempts at calculating what an outcome should be often aren't complete. Creative imagination and persistence can often find its way around seemingly insurmountable obstacles. Shortsightedness can render dire threats invisible and lead to ruin.

The Martian Engineering Notebook is a scientific supplement and critique of The Martian by Andy Weir. It contains explanations of scientific concepts and detailed solutions to problems related to the challenges of Mark Watney's ordeal on Mars. Should he have survived? What did he get right? What did he get wrong? What did he get wrong, but it didn't matter? These are the kinds of questions that The Martian Engineering Notebook seeks to provide researched and organized answers to.

Volume 1 covers weather on Mars and an in-depth analysis of the resources at Mark's disposal as well as what it takes to build a farming ecosystem on Mars.

Using Telemetry Science and PHM to Predict Spacecrfaft Telemetry Behavior

by Losik Ph.D, Len

The author provides a technical background necessary to use the proprietary, dynamic data-driven and model-based predictive algorithms used in a PHM program. The results from using PHM is predicting equipment behavior with 100% certainty, something that has been wrongly believed impossible since the use of probability analysis began by the U.S. military and government in the early 1960's. PHM programs allow for predicting normal spacecraft behavior and then illustrate the presence of premature aging (a.k.a. non repeatable transient event) and then discriminate and identify premature aging from other normal occurring transient behavior. Premature aging has been present for all spacecraft equipment failures but was usually diagnosed as other non-repetitive transient events in telemetry behavior at the spacecraft factory during manufacturing and test, after factory testing is completed, on the launch pad, during launch if equipment telemetry is available and while in orbit and on an interplanetary trajectory. Using the author's proprietary predictive algorithms, whose use began on the Air Force'd GPS program when the author was the Boeing GPS Space and Ground Segment Manager on contract to the Air Force to win funding for the GPS program, to predict GPS satellite atomic clock failures during system wide multi-service testing, The presence of premature aging is used to predict with certainty when the equipment will fail by converting the equipment telemetry from performance data to reliability data. PHM technology converts the performance data, known as equipment or product telemetry into a measurement of remaining usable life when the presence of premature aging is confirmed by a prognostic analysis. The use of the prognostic analysis is only valid for electrical and mechanical spacecraft related equipment and products that have passed qualification, certification and/or acceptance testing because the equipment will have have adequate design margins. PHM cannot be used to predict failures and determine design margins with 100% certainty. Using Telemetry Science and PHM allows engineers to predict equipment failures weeks and months with 100% certainty prior to their failure allowing many advantages including providing 100% reliable equipment, for increasing mission success at a lower mission cost. The authors describes the relationship between RF communications principles with the spacecraft telemetry behavior on spacecraft in Earth orbit, lunar orbit or interplanetary trajectory that allows the presence of premature aging to be identified with 100% certainty among other transient spacecraft equipment behavior in telemetry. This book can be used in conjunction with the author's other books that describe PHM technology and its application on spacecraft.

Ryker (Kings of Korruption MC Book 1)

by Geri Glenn

Charlotte

Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve taken care of everyone around me, including my self-centered older sister, Anna. When her poor choices make us targets of the Devil’s Rejects Motorcycle Club, I grab her and we run like hell. A new city, a new job, a new life. It’s almost perfect – and then I meet Ryker.

He’s gorgeous, rugged and too cocky for his own damned good. But he’s a biker – exactly the type of man I’ve been running from. I have no business getting involved with a man like him. Too bad I can’t get him out of my head.

Ryker

As V.P. of the Kings of Korruption MC, I know all about violence and loss. In my world, getting involved with a woman never turns out well. Avoiding commitment isn’t something I have to work at – it’s just a way of life. Then I meet Charlotte. Drawn to her kindness and beauty, I know there’s no place for her in my world. I have to let her go.

Finding Charlotte battered and bloody late one night, I go against my own beliefs, making it my mission to protect her. The Devils are out for blood and it’s Charlotte’s they want. Maybe I can’t keep her but I will put my life on the line to keep her safe. If not, I face losing the only woman that’s ever made me feel alive.
