Dubliners (AmazonClassics Edition)

by James Joyce

In exploring everyday life and its intersections with death, this enduring collection of stories offers a naturalistic depiction of the working class in early twentieth-century Dublin. Joyce masterfully portrays frustrations and aborted desires to escape the mundane; transformative epiphanies both great and small; and the restraints, loneliness, violence, and contemplations of lives lived.Though Joyce’s subjects were considered as taboo as his language was unsavory, Dubliners was a milestone work praised for its unflinching realism. It remains a transcendent and relatable portrait of the perils—and acceptance—of the human condition.AmazonClassics brings you timeless works from the masters of storytelling. Tim Brennan is an occasional consultant with the Philadelphia Police Department. Captain Henry Donaldson has called on his expertise a few times. This time, however, the crime is a puzzler. A fifty-year-old man, by the name of James Jameson, is found dead in a trash bin in an alley at the back of a downtown restaurant. He was wearing an expensive tailored suit and had an extremely valuable ring on each finger. At the issue of his autopsy, Dr. Ashton, M.E., finds out that all James’s fingers and toes were broken before death. He was drugged with a lethal dose of sedative. The investigation only takes a decisive turn when Tim discovers a photo album displaying a picture of each of the ten ladies James has either married or dated over the years. Each lady wears one of the rings found on James’s fingers. The ladies’ interviews do not lead to any valid conclusion. The case is dying until Tim realizes that some of these women must have had children with James. Yes, one of them – a daughter and James’s latest conquest – is the woman who engineered a terrible revenge on her father. But is she the one who ultimately killed him?

The Pain of Glass

by Giles Darling

A one-act play for eight actors. Set in a courtroom in 1878 in Victorian England, the play follows the trial of Mr. Jake Ashwood, a bladesmith's apprentice, for the murder of Mr. Vincent Vangilder at Mr. Vangilder's photographic studio. The counsels for the prosecution and for the defence examine and cross-examine the police constable first on the scene, Mr. Vangilder's neighbour, Mr. Ashwood's best friend, and Mr. Ashwood himself. After summations by the counsels and by the judge, the audience acts as jury to decide if Mr. Ashwood is guilty or not guilty. The play has two endings depending on the verdict reached. This is a 45 minute play suitable for a small group of school children or young actors to perform. It contains lots of references and information about ordinary lives from the late 1800s.
