An important technique for achieving what you want in life is through practicing assertiveness. Assertiveness is a style of communicating that emphasizes honesty and respect while standing up for your rights. Being an assertive person means you have no qualms about expressing your needs, opinions, desires, and wishes. At the center of assertive communication is respect for yourself and for other people. Chances are, you struggle with asserting yourself, but it’s really not a difficult place to be if you can apply yourself to improving. One of the keystones of assertive behavior is learning to say “No.” This sends the message that you are not ready to please people at your expense. It may be hard at first, but you eventually grow into it.The voice associated with assertive behavior is neither too fast nor too slow, and it is also not high or small. The perfect voice is resonant which means it is rich and clear. If people have to struggle to hear what you are saying, then you have lost track.Nonverbal cues play a huge role in assertive communication. The most important nonverbal cues are establishing eye contact, having great posture, and practicing active listening. When it comes to the actual delivery, you had better be prepared.
