Stasi Prison Hohenschönhausen: The colour edition

by Harlan Crane

Berlin-Hohenschönhausen Memorial (Gedenkstätte Berlin-Hohenschönhausen) is a museum and memorial located in Berlin's north-eastern Lichtenberg district in the locality of Alt-Hohenschönhausen, part of the former borough of Hohenschönhausen. It was opened in 1994 on the site of the main political prison of the former East German Communist Ministry of State Security, the Stasi.Unlike many other government and military institutions in East Germany, Hohenschönhausen prison was not stormed by demonstrators after the fall of the Berlin Wall, allowing prison authorities to destroy evidence of the prison's functions and history. Because of this, today's knowledge of the functioning of the prison comes mainly from eye-witness accounts and documents sourced from other East German institutions. The prison was depicted in the 2006 film The Lives of Others, and in 2017 TV series The Same Sky. It is a member organisation of the Platform of European Memory and Conscience.Harlan Crane (°1990, Saskatoon, Canada) is an artist who mainly works with photography. By demonstrating the omnipresent lingering of a ‘corporate world’, his photos references post-colonial theory as well as the avant-garde or the post-modern and the left-wing democratic movement as a form of resistance against the logic of the capitalist market system. His photos demonstrate how life extends beyond its own subjective limits and often tells a story about the effects of global cultural interaction over the latter half of the twentieth century. It challenges the binaries we continually reconstruct between Self and Other, between our own ‘cannibal’ and ‘civilized’ selves. Harlan Crane currently lives and works in Berlin, Germany.

A Little Bit of Arizona: Volume 33

by Paul Moore

This is a photography book; it does not explain or attempt to teach you about photography, in Arizona or anywhere else. One of the greatest pleasures about photography is experimenting to see if the image you capture resembles the image you had in your mind when you took it. This book is small; it is intended to be small. It is an attempt to bring the cost of photography books down to as low as they can go without sacrificing digital quality of the images within. This is the thirty third volume in a series, length or number unknown at the moment. However, when the series becomes sufficiently voluminous, they will be combined into a larger, and unfortunately more expensive, volume. This volume contains about 40 images. Future volumes may contain a few more or a few less depending upon final digital size. I sincerely hope you enjoy the images within.

Fifteen Exercises in Perception: Walking Poems/Standing Photographs, Ways of Observing with your Smartphone, Camera, and Notebook

by Alexandria Searls

Details: 112 pages, plus photo inserts for Kindle edition. Text now has pop-up options to view font in larger size while still keeping original layout.
Who says technology can't bring you closer to nature? With your smartphone or camera, you can learn new ways of observing. "Fifteen Exercises in Perception" is a photography and writing workbook that allows you space in your everyday life to relax and notice the world around you. Instead of getting lost in your smartphone, you can use it to locate your self within the woods, on urban streets, wherever you are.

There are fifteen exercises that play with the way you’re perceiving. Here are brief descriptions of the chapters:

I. Introduction --how to approach the exercises
II. Almost an Island --observing while varying your types of movement
III. Windows --using the windows of your home to learn about perspective
IV. Poem for a Terrace: Words into Photo Maps --thinking spatially about the landscape
V. Oracle –answering inner questions by noticing metaphors in the outside world
VI. Duet –learning from the different vision of a friend
VII. Interpreting Stones –examining an element of the world around us
VIII. Running Poem –experimenting with how speed affects perception
IX. River Hikes –noticing the difference in your perception in a group vs. when you’re alone
X. Urban Wanderer: Twelve Photographs –finding out how limiting the number of pictures you take changes your results—or if it does
XI. Urban Wanderer: No Limits –discovering if taking unlimited photographs alters your themes or results
XII. Photographing Nothing, and Writing Down the Sound Between Words –approaching negative space, and honoring silence and the opportunity to hear
XIII. My Neighborhood –understanding what you think and feel about where you live
XIV. Animal Search –getting to know an animal’s world, which is also your world
XV. Ways of Observing –assessing the exercises

The main purpose of the book to bring you to new ways of observing. You listen as the world speaks, and then you speak back. With the device that’s always with you, your observations can happen within any moment of the day, and in any place.

"Fifteen Exercises in Perception" gives examples of completed projects for each exercises. The book is meant for a variety of audiences, including individual readers and teachers. The exercises were designed for a semester's worth of assignments at the college level, but can also be adapted for use by younger students.

Alexandria Searls teaches art and the skills of exploration at the Lewis & Clark Exploratory Center in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Camera: For Photography Enthusiasts

by Josh Henry

The tone was set with the very first pressconference on Press Day – which was the bestorganised for ages too – with the stage beingtechnically Leica’s, but also shared with Sigmaand Panasonic. Hello? Something big is goingon here, we were all thinking as we trooped intothe venue. And, of course, it was. You can readall about the ‘L Mount Alliance’ in our Photokinareport on the following pages, but collaborationbetween three of the currently most dynamiccompanies in the camera business at present ishugely significant. It’s a very powerful grouping, and all three members will benefit in one way oranother – as will photographers – but it’s anotherclear indication of where the camera world isheading over the next few years… at least atthe upper end of the market. With the impactof Nikon Z and Canon EOS R still sinking in, thetriple whammy of the L Mount Alliance left fewof us in doubt that we were witnessing historybeing made. I’ve been to a few momentouspress conferences during my 17 Photokinas since1986, but this was definitely up there with thebiggest of them when it comes to leaving yougrappling with all the possible implications. We started to get more of an idea of this atPanasonic’s event which, logically, was up next inthe same venue and where some of the detailsof the all-new Lumix S system – bodies andlenses – were revealed. In a nutshell, this timenext year, L mount could well be a system of fourfull-35mm mirrorless camera bodies (includingone from Sigma), 25 lenses and a number ofmount adapters. That’s definitely a hungry catabout to be set among the pigeons

by Maxwell Pakes

You Are About To Learn How To Stop Taking Bland, Uncreative, Amateurish Photos On Your Expensive Camera! If you are like most beginner photographers, the reason you acquired your top of the range camera is because of the hope that you could take out of this world, professional looking photographs with your digital camera for posterity.Unfortunately, what they show on camera ads is nothing close to what the average untrained beginner takes. While the typical ad shows users capturing magic moments on the fly while taking advantage of all the cool features in a standard digital camera to optimize photo composition, the typical beginner user takes boring photos that are either too exposed, blurred, boring and uncreative. Why is that so, you may ask?The reason is simple; for the average untrained beginner, the typical DSLR camera is too advanced such that they can’t use any other function other than the automatic mode.Obviously, you didn’t buy a fancy DSLR to point and shoot all the time. Sometimes you want to compose your photos professionally by leveraging the full power of your digital camera. You want to take photos exactly as you see them in your mind. How then do you do that?Let me show you how in this book!I will lay out everything for you to consume in easy lingo-free language!Forget about enrolling for a photography course for now.
