OCR is Not the Only Font

by Damon L. Wakes

Silly, surreal and sometimes serious, these thirty-one very short stories cover a vast range of subjects and themes. Written entirely during July 2012, these flash fiction pieces are accompanied by a deeply unscientific analysis of the challenge that spawned them: to write thirty-one stories in thirty-one days. From lovesick androids to disgruntled minotaurs, the stories in this book embrace Classical mythology, futuristic sci-fi, and a variety of other genres that would much rather have stayed out of the way. Within these pages, you will find disgraced superheroes, unionised zombies, steam-powered clowns and incompetent astronauts. Includes a non-fiction section analysing the results of this month-long experiment. In the interests of making these stories as widely available as possible, an electronic version of this book is available for FREE (ISBN: 9781476408859). The paperback is intended for those who wish to have a copy on their bookshelf, or who do not approve of those new-fangled ebook things.

Poet Of The Wrong Generation

by Lonnie Ostrow

“It’s not that I don’t love you, and my tears are yet to dry. But you can’t go back and forth forever and we’ve already said goodbye.”Through these words, a young poet unearths his musical soul while severing ties with the woman he loves after her stunning betrayal. Unknowingly, in writing this ballad of liberation, he will soon evolve as one of the fastest rising stars on the pop music landscape. The year is 1991; the place, New York City. Here we meet Johnny Elias, a college student from Brooklyn with boundless adoration for two things in life: timeless popular music, and the heart of a sweet, complicated young woman who is clearly out of his league.Megan Price not only is the object of Johnny’s affection, but also the only daughter of New York’s most powerful PR woman: the indomitable Katherine Price.Projecting that her daughter’s boyfriend will never live up to the family standard, Katherine cleverly perpetrates a series of duplicitous schemes to rid Johnny from her high-class world. But in her callous disregard, she inadvertently sets him on a determined course to his improbable musical destiny - while sending her own daughter spiraling down a path of devastation.Poet of the Wrong Generation tells the symmetrical story of a lovable underdog and his meteoric rise to stardom, his humiliating downfall and his unprecedented attempt to reclaim his place as the unlikely musical spokesman for his generation. At the heart of Poet is a tale of star-crossed lovers and their struggle with unforeseen success and disillusionment, in an attempt to rediscover lasting harmony.Uniquely integrating a variety of original song compositions, Poet projects the epic clash between true contentment and the fable of stardom’s rewards; a nostalgic journey through the major events of the 1990s, with a cherished cast of characters and a stunningly unpredictable conclusion. The ultimate rock & roll love story.REVIEWS:4 Stars out of 4Eloquently written song lyrics highlight this successful novel by Ostrow. His paean to the music industry and true love is a compelling read. The manipulative Katherine is ever-present, which adds dimension to the story. This is a classic tale of star-crossed lovers. Johnny's up-and-down career is the thing great novels are built on.RT BookReviews

Excerpt:

“Are you going to kiss me?” My voice came out breathless and the corners of his mouth curved up into a devastating smile.
“Believe me, you’ll know when I’m going to kiss you.” He lowered his face until it was just inches from mine. My heart rate increased and a flush crawled up my neck and over my face. His eyes were locked on mine and I was unable to look away or move, even though I knew I should. He leaned in even closer until his lips hovered just over my jaw. He took my chin gently in one hand and trailed his thumb over my bottom lip. I felt his warm breath on my neck as he moved to whisper in my ear.
“You’re not ready for me yet Princess, but when you are I promise you won’t have to ask whether or not I’m going to do it.” Just like that he pulled away and walked right out of the room. It took me a moment to collect myself and I was left wondering what the heck just happened. Holy heart attack Batman. I was in trouble. That much I knew.

Max and the Gatekeeper

by James Todd Cochrane and Susan K. Szepanski

A war has been waging for centuries; a magical and technological battle between good and evil. This conflict will affect life everywhere, but not everyone is aware it exists. When twelve-year old Max Rigdon is sent to stay with his grandfather for the summer, he unwillingly enters the fight.

The day Max steps off the bus he is marked with an evil curse and immediately becomes the target of evil men and creatures with designs on ruling the universe. Not only does this curse cause Max physical pain but it allows his enemies to track and find him. He soon learns that the reason for this unwanted attention is because his grandfather is the keeper of a gateway; a powerful machine that makes travel to hundreds of strange unknown worlds possible. The enemy will do anything to gain possession of this power in their quest to control all worlds.

With the help of his friend Cindy and others, Max must quickly learn the necessary skills to survive if he is to avoid the deadly trap that has been planned for him and his grandfather. A trap that has been decades in the making with Max as the missing piece. If successful it will change life as we know it.

A Room of One’s Own (Wisehouse Classics Edition)

by Virginia Woolf

ROOM OF ONE'S OWN is an extended essay by Virginia Woolf. First published on 24 October 1929, the essay was based on a series of lectures she delivered at Newnham College and Girton College, two women's colleges at Cambridge University in October 1928. While this extended essay in fact employs a fictional narrator and narrative to explore women both as writers of and characters in fiction, the manuscript for the delivery of the series of lectures, titled "Women and Fiction," which was published in Forum March 1929, and hence the essay, are considered non-fiction. The essay is generally seen as a feminist text, and is noted in its argument for both a literal and figurative space for women writers within a literary tradition dominated by men. Collision (Portland Street Kings Book 1)

by Evie Harper and Hot Tree Edits

When I was fourteen years old, I killed for the first time. That day I learned cruelty wasn’t only within the walls we had just escaped.

It hasn’t been easy growing up in the middle of a war. A struggle to find shelter. Fighting to protect our bodies against the corruption of the streets. Nobody cared about the street kids who had to beg and steal to eat.

Now we are the Portland Street Kings – A family forged through loyalty not blood. To get through this life of broken dreams alive, we’ve become hard, uncaring and merciless. We do what must be done to keep our family safe, we will harm those who stand against us.

We have it all, feared and respected by those on the streets. Then she collided into my world, and with her came demons from my past, back to haunt us all.
