Better with Jesus: A Mission 119 Guide to Hebrews

by Hutson Smelley

Why does God allow Christians to face trials and even persecution? Is there a purpose in the suffering? What is spiritual maturity and how does it relate to knowledge of the Word of God? What does an exemplary life of faith look like? Do all believers have the same experience of God now and in the world to come? The book of Hebrews answers these questions and much more. It is the greatest Christological treatise ever written, explaining Jesus’ position as Son, better than angels, than Abraham, than Moses, than Aaron, than all Levitical priests. Jesus provided a better sacrifice in a better tabernacle and as the Son, heir and sovereign of everything, will exercise in the world to come the dominion the first Adam lost in Genesis 3. The primary exhortation of the book, as needed today as it was in the first century, is to steadfastly endure in the face of trials, obedient to God’s Word and with eyes focused on the heavenly country. But within its pages are ominous warnings to those who would fail to endure, understood by many expositors as warnings about losing one’s salvation or that continued disobedience proves someone was never saved to begin with. This text will show the book of Hebrews has an eschatological orientation, our lives are a training ground for the world to come, and the warnings in Hebrews are that how we live now will affect our Christian experience both now and in the world to come. The MISSION 119 SERIES is committed to in-depth exposition tethered to the context and argument of the book under consideration so that the primary focus is the author’s intended message.

Protecting the Rights of People with Autism in the Fields of Education and Employment: International, European and National Perspectives

by Valentina Della Fina

Fundamental rights for all people with disabilities, education and employment are key for the inclusion of people with autism. They play as facilitators for the social inclusion of persons with autism and as multipliers for their enjoyment of other fundamental rights. After outlining the international and European dimensions of the legal protection of the rights to education and employment of people with autism, the book provides an in-depth analysis of domestic legislative, judicial and administrative practice of the EU Member States in these fields. Each chapter identifies the good practices on inclusive education and employment of people with autism consistent with principles and obligations enshrined in the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (Articles 24 and 27). The book contains the scientific results of the European Project “Promoting equal rights of people with autism in the field of employment and education” aimed at supporting the implementation of the UN Convention in the fields of inclusive education and employment.

Writing Self, Writing Empire: Chandar Bhan Brahman and the Cultural World of the Indo-Persian State Secretary (South Asia Across the Disciplines)

by Rajeev Kinra

A free ebook version of this title is available through Luminos, University of California Press’s new open access publishing program for monographs. Visit www.luminosoa.org to learn more.Writing Self, Writing Empire examines the life, career, and writings of the Mughal state secretary, or munshi, Chandar Bhan “Brahman” (d. c.1670), one of the great Indo-Persian poets and prose stylists of early modern South Asia.  Chandar Bhan’s life spanned the reigns of four different emperors, Akbar (1556-1605), Jahangir (1605-1627), Shah Jahan (1628-1658), and Aurangzeb ‘Alamgir (1658-1707), the last of the “Great Mughals” whose courts dominated the culture and politics of the subcontinent at the height of the empire’s power, territorial reach, and global influence.  As a high-caste Hindu who worked for a series of Muslim monarchs and other officials, forming powerful friendships along the way, Chandar Bhan’s experience bears vivid testimony to the pluralistic atmosphere of the Mughal court, particularly during the reign of Shah Jahan, the celebrated builder of the Taj Mahal.  But his widely circulated and emulated works also touch on a range of topics central to our understanding of the court’s literary, mystical, administrative, and ethical cultures, while his letters and autobiographical writings provide tantalizing examples of early modern Indo-Persian modes of self-fashioning.  Chandar Bhan’s oeuvre is a valuable window onto a crucial, though surprisingly neglected, period of Mughal cultural and political history.

Christianity, Islam, and Orisa-Religion: Three Traditions in Comparison and Interaction (The Anthropology of Christianity Book 18)

by J.D.Y. Peel

A free ebook version of this title is available through Luminos, University of California Press’s open access publishing program for monographs. Visit www.luminosoa.org to learn more. The Yoruba of southwestern Nigeria are exceptional for the copresence among them of three religious traditions: Islam, Christianity, and the indigenous orisa religion. In this comparative study, at once historical and anthropological, Peel explores the intertwined character of the three religions and the dense imbrication of religion in all aspects of Yoruba history up to the present. For over 400 years, the Yoruba have straddled two geocultural spheres: one reaching north over the Sahara to the world of Islam, the other linking them to the Euro-American world via the Atlantic. These two external spheres were the source of contrasting cultural influences, notably those emanating from the world religions. However, the Yoruba not only imported Islam and Christianity but also exported their own orisa religion to the New World. Before the voluntary modern diaspora that has brought many Yoruba to Europe and the Americas, tens of thousands were sold as slaves in the New World, bringing with them the worship of the orisa.   Peel offers deep insight into important contemporary themes such as religious conversion, new religious movements, relations between world religions, the conditions of religious violence, the transnational flows of contemporary religion, and the interplay between tradition and the demands of an ever-changing present. In the process, he makes a major theoretical contribution to the anthropology of world religions.

Magic Poetry: Illustrated Children's Verse for Ages 3-103 (Rhyming Poetry Book with Pictures for Children)

by Piaras O Cionnaoith

This collection of children’s poetry spans over a forty year period. Taking a break from serious writing, I remembered some of the songs and poems I wrote as a young teenager. I thought I’d share them here with you now. They may not be ‘classics’ by no means but I hope your children or grandchildren will find fun in reading them.

The one thing about poetry, I believe, is that it’s everlasting. Words are beautiful and uplifting if they are used in the right way. I hope that by sharing this collection of poetry, it will introduce young minds to a world of endless opportunities. Imagination is like the Universe...endless in its possibilities.

I hope that this work will encourage young minds. I also hope that exploring the mystical realm will ignite creativity to encourage future writers to astound us with their imaginings. It starts with a few simple words.

Taking Flight

by Adrian Magnuson

Jeremy Walsh’s parents assume he’s been abducted by the elderly man he met on a cross-country flight, but it’s the other way around.

Two unlikely companions meet in midair: 13-year-old Jeremy, sent against his will by his career-absorbed father to spend the summer with his bipolar mother, and Harry, one-legged and afflicted with mid-stage Alzheimer’s, who escapes the confinement of home for what may be his last adventure. Their journey begins, trailed by Harry’s wife and Jeremy’s parents, who threaten to cut it short. It’s a race against time and circumstance.

"In Adrian Magnuson's Taking Flight a curmudgeon losing his memory and a snarky teen fleeing his parents find a common passion in bird watching. Endearing characters, delightful story and a poignant final scene give this book wings along with the beautifully depicted birds.” —Frances Wood, author of Brushed by Feathers: A Year of Birdwatching in the West

"Taking Flight is an evocative and moving contemporary novel. It is, at every level, a story about love. For one character it is a coming of age tale, for the other the end of an age. Both are runaways, yet each ultimately is searching for home. I highly recommend this heart-touching, beautifully written book." —Andrea Hurst, president of Andrea Hurst Literary Management

“Filled with well-developed, real-life characters, Taking Flight’s heart-breaking but satisfying story hits on all cylinders: action, comedy, and emotion.” —Terry Persun, award winning author of Sweet Song

Decades of it. You do whatever it takes—and you try to fit the rest of your life in there somewhere. Boone knows the routine. He lives it…..he loves it…..and then he loses it. Injured and off the ice for the remainder of the season, he heads to the Full Heart Ranch, for reasons only he knows. Because his concussion isn’t the only problem he faces. In fact, it’s not even the biggest one.Jolene Tolley is the head physical therapist at the Full Heart Ranch Veterans Retreat Center. It's the least she can do for her beloved team. After spending hours together in the gym every day, Jolene discovers that Boone is dealing with a lot more than just his physical symptoms. She shouldn’t care—it’s not her problem or her responsibility. But as their attraction grows, her heart won't let her run. She’s confident she can help his body heal, but can she help with the bigger problem? Will he trust her enough to let her try?Boone warns the beautiful, bubbly therapist against getting involved in his personal drama. Better to not find out things she’s going to wish she didn’t know. Explorations in Consciousness: A New Approach to Out-of-Body Experiences

by Frederick Aardema

In Explorations in Consciousness, Frederick Aardema, a clinical researcher, provides a profound account of the out-of-body experience, covering some of the most mystifying aspects of this experience. Throughout the book, the author seamlessly weaves in his own travels into different fields of consciousness, including experiences in the personal field, where he is confronted with the constructs of his own psyche, as well as visitations to collective and archetypal fields of consciousness that appear to have an independent existence beyond the eye of the beholder. Highly original and groundbreaking, Explorations in Consciousness presents a model of reality in which nothing can ever be taken for granted. It proposes that consciousness is embedded within a wider field of possibilities that become real depending on our interaction with the world around us, whether “in” or “out” of the body. Regardless of what you believe about the out-of-body state, this book will challenge and excite you to become an explorer of consciousness. It provides a powerful method to induce the OBE, as well as new tools on how to navigate the entire spectrum of consciousness yourself.
