Mentoring and Educational Outcomes of Black Graduate Students

by Nicole Sullivan

The purpose of this research is to examine the ways in which mentoring affects black graduate students’ completion of programs of study. Performance is measured by completion of their graduate program, length of time taken to complete the program, grade point average (GPA), and overall attitude about their graduate school experience. On average, over half of all black graduate students leave their programs of study before completion compared to 25% attrition (non-completion of program of study) of white students.
A review of the literature suggests that any form of mentoring improves completion rates among black graduate students. Existing research further suggests that when paired with like mentors, such as same race or gender, black graduate students complete their programs at e...

Area 51: What They Don't Want You to Know (Paranormal Activities Book 2)

by Steve Watson

The Infamously Secretive Area 51 Exposed! There are things out there that defy belief; there are certain unknowns that just can’t be easily explained. The massive base hiding in plain sight known as Area 51 is one of those unknown quantities. It was initially nothing more than a no-man’s land of desert and sage brush, and during World War II, the military sought to utilize this desolate environment to test some of the deadliest weapons known to man. After the war, the place fell under the jurisdiction of the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC), which designated its administrative sections as numbered “areas” for ease of reference. It was from this simple organizational scheme that the infamous “Area 51” was born. And although Area 51 would become home to the biggest military installati...

Pragmatism as Post-Postmodernism: Lessons from John Dewey (American Philosophy)

by Larry A. Hickman

Larry A. Hickman presents John Dewey as very much at home in the busy mix of contemporary philosophy—as a thinker whose work now, more than fifty years after his death, still furnishes fresh insights into cutting-edge philosophical debates. Hickman argues that it is precisely the rich, pluralistic mix of contemporary philosophical discourse, with its competing research programs in French-inspired postmodernism, phenomenology, Critical Theory, Heidegger studies, analytic philosophy, and neopragmatism—all busily engaging, challenging, and informing one another—that invites renewed examination of Dewey’s central ideas.Hickman offers a Dewey who both anticipated some of the central insights of French-inspired postmodernism and, if he were alive today, would certainly be one of its most...

Heal Yourself Unveiling Your Hidden Heritage: Transgenerational Therapy and the Wisdom of the Ages

by TONY T. GAILLARD

Indeed, traumas, unfinished mourning, conflictual experiences and family secrets reverberate from generation to generation, shaping the lives of the descendants. However, and despite the influences of these transgenerational inheritances, the author reminds us that we are not a simple product of our past, nor just the fruit of our family tree. We can rewrite the false, incomplete or missing history and integrate our hidden heritages. Africa's Lions: Growth Traps and Opportunities for Six African Economies

Expert African researchers offer unique perspectives into the challenges and issues in Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Mozambique, Nigeria, and South Africa.Despite a growing body of research on African economies, very little has focused on the relationship between economic growth and employment outcomes at the detailed country level. A lack of empirical data has deprived policymakers of a robust evidence base on which to make informed decisions. By harnessing country-level household, firm, and national accounts data together with existing analytical country research—the authors have attempted to bridge this gap...

The Buddha was not a Buddhist (1-5: Intro to Practice): A Rational Path to Meditation, Mindfulness, and the Art of Fighting without Fighting

by Zhi-qiang Chen

YOU HEAR ABOUT meditation and something called mindfulness more and more these days, but why and how should you practice these things, and what happens when you do?

In "The Buddha was not a Buddhist," author Chen Zhi-qiang describes meditation techniques and clarifies what it means to meditate so that one understands what happens in the meditation experience. What a person will discover is that there is nothing esoteric or mystical or spiritual about meditation and what “happens” during meditation is basically this: nothing. But in this nothingness, one can begin to see more clearly the true nature of who we are and the true nature of our existent reality.

"The Buddha was not a Buddhist" pointedly analyzes various ideas of Buddhism, Taoism, Jiddu Krishnamurt...

A SOCIETY OF INSTANT: Surviving in a tough society

by Deborah Siegel

It’s certainly no secret that we live in a society with a need for speed and a taste for intolerance. Most of us still understand that faster doesn’t necessarily mean better, but we’re willing to settle for less in order to enjoy life more right now. For most, the art of wondering and waiting, of imagining and dreaming has been discarded for over-indulgence and quantity consumption. The reward isn’t to have the best, but to have it first. Coming to the market first with a new product or service is what counts; so what if it happens to have some bugs that need to be worked out or simply ignored. In the process of wanting everything instantly, what has happened to our integrity, to the human spirit, to our values and morals?
Only time will tell, if we’re willing to wai...

The People's Victory: Stories from the Front Lines in the Fight for Marriage Equality

by Marriage Equality USA

In 1996 a small group of everyday Americans, fed up with being told by allies that marriage equality was the "wrong" issue, and under attack by opponents who said their love and families were "not worthy" of the same institution, launched what would become the nation's oldest and largest grassroots organization for equal marriage rights. The People's Victory is a collection of their stories of how through education and advocacy, success and set back, everyday individuals across the country found their voice to resist, fight, and eventually bring equal marriage rights to an entire nation. The People's Victory shares deeply moving personal testimonies of men and women who lost their spouses to death, only to lose everything they've built for decades; parents who became activists to save th...

PARADOX

by Incognito

what do you mean when you say I? normally we would respond by saying a center of awareness or a feeling of empowerment/selfishness. but after answering that question, another question comes which is “who is the one aware of yourself?" fire cannot burn itself in the same way you cannot look into your own eyes without using a mirror. by being aware of this illusionary feeling of a self, there is a separation. and if you think about that long enough to realize that there is no self, who is it that knows there is no ego? we often hide behind the masks we create; the mask embedded into our skin. we try to find our real selves in our mask which only leads from one maze to another. lost between sanity and madness. what would it be like to remove the mask you don’t remember putting on? what wo...

Brotherhood

by Agni Yoga Society

Brotherhood is the thirteenth book from the Agni Yoga Series which is composed of fourteen books. In them is found a synthesis of ancient Eastern beliefs and modern Western thought and a bridge between the spiritual and the scientific. Unlike previous yogas, Agni Yoga is a path not of physical disciplines, meditation, or asceticism—but of practice in daily life. It is the yoga of fiery energy, of consciousness, of responsible, directed thought. It teaches that the evolution of the planetary consciousness is a pressing necessity and that, through individual striving, it is an attainable aspiration for mankind. It affirms the existence of the Hierarchy of Light and the center of the Heart as the link with the Hierarchy and with the far-off worlds. Though not systematized in an ordinary sen...

I feel like something huge is missing, like someone is hiding some universal principle from me, ensuring that I’m destined to fail no matter what I do. I’m starting to think I’m perpetually enslaved by a system I don’t understand simply because ‘they’ don’t want me to.”Have you ever had these kinds of negative thoughts in your daily life? Unfortunately, you’re not wrong, and you’re definitely not alone.People, especially in the United States, are programmed to believe in a limited worldview designed by the masters (i.e., those in power) to keep them from learning the truth. These so-called masters have brainwashed you and everyone y...

There Were No Cats in America: "An American Tail" Enters Trump’s America

by Adam M. DeSimone

Using the 1986 animated film “An American Tail” as a framing device, this work explores the immigrant experience of émigrés who lived in the United States during the Gilded Age. While the film itself celebrates the arrival of the furry, lovable, Mousekewitz family to the U.S., this essay comments on the evolution of U.S. immigration policy from the late 19th to early 21st centuries, with special attention paid to the National Origins Act, the Chinese Exclusion Act, and to President Trump’s 2017 “Muslim bans.” Major push and pull factors associated with immigration are examined as well; a comparison between the socioeconomic conditions of the Gilded Age and modern era follow. In this essay, the author argues that the Trump administration’s views on immigration are similar to t...

Me, Too!: Child and Adult Sexual Abuse and Prevention

by Bierker MSW, Susan Sophie

Me, Too!: a Skills GuideHow to Detect, Prevent, and Heal for Thrivers, Therapists, Parents, and Teachers. It's not the current #MeToo movement that this book is about. This book is about the next one.In her experience as a therapist helping 100s of those whose lives were touched by what is now a media circus and the cause of political debate, Susan Sophie Bierker found that it's not the acts of violence and abuse that cause the most damage, it's the silence. The current "Me, Too" movement is breaking the silence, but not addressing the cause. And if the cause is not addressed, if the acts are not prevented, intervened with, detected early, and healed, the next wave of "Me, Too" will carry with it the shame of a nation because we'll know that it could have been prevented.* This book is for yo...

RED

by Jennifer A. Salerno

Why are America's teachers striking? On April 26, 2018, my family of four and about 75,000 others marched on the Capitol of Arizona in an endless sea of red. This is one elementary educator's personal account of the rise of the #RedforEd movement. This short memoir is a powerful read about the personal struggles of a family working tirelessly in public education, and the power of the masses of educators around our country. What provoked Arizona teachers to the point of striking? How did the Arizona governor and legislators respond? What were the fears of educators and students on the day before the walk-out? How did it feel to march among tens of thousands of other passionate, red-shirt wearing, chanting pioneers of public education reform? And, what exactly happened at the passing of...

Ancient Terracottas from South Italy and Sicily in the J. Paul Getty Museum

by Maria Lucia Ferruzza

In the ancient world, terracotta sculpture was ubiquitous. Readily available and economical—unlike stone suitable for carving—clay allowed artisans to craft figures of remarkable variety and expressiveness. Terracottas from South Italy and Sicily attest to the prolific coroplastic workshops that supplied sacred and decorative images for sanctuaries, settlements, and cemeteries. Sixty terracottas are investigated here by noted scholar Maria Lucia Ferruzza, comprising a selection of significant types from the Getty’s larger collection—life-size sculptures, statuettes, heads and busts, altars, and decorative appliqués. In addition to the comprehensive catalogue entries, the publication includes a guide to the full collection of over one thousand other figurines and molds from the reg...

Cellular network concepts have been simplified and explained in common language to provide clarity in the interpretation of reports and maps and the step-by-step guide provides an outline for preparing, analyzing, and mapping rec...

Aum

by Agni Yoga Society

Aum is the twelfth book from the Agni Yoga Series which is composed of fourteen books. Though not systematized in an ordinary sense, Agni Yo...

God, Conceivability, and Evil: The Logical Problem of Evil Revisited

by Kevin Moore

Perhaps you’ve heard that Alvin Plantinga resolved the logical problem of evil decades ago and that even most atheists agree. But, what if you aren’t most folks? What if you find yourself in that minority of folks who still worry about the compatibility of God and evil? What if you question Plantinga’s dubious suggestion that God’s desire for moral good is a good enough reason for Him to allow evil (if, as it turned out, He couldn’t get any moral good without allowing at least some evil)? What is the resolve for worries such as these? God, Conceivability, and Evil is about resolving the logical problem of evil for the rest of us. And, importantly, it is about doing so in a way that allows us to avoid BS-ing ourselves and others in the process. The solution that Moore defends to t...

Practicing Presence: Insights from the Streets: (Mindfulness and Homelessness) (The Emptiness of Our Hands Book 2)

by Phyllis Cole-Dai

Written from the perspective of life on the streets, Practicing Presence is an uncommon invitation to deepen your practice of presence, or mindfulness. In 1999 Phyllis Cole-Dai lived by choice for forty-seven days on the streets of Columbus, Ohio. Together with James Murray, she practiced being present among chronically homeless people, offering them sustained attention and compassionate acceptance. She and James eventually recounted their story in The Emptiness of Our Hands, an "eye-opening" and "life-changing" read.Ten years later Phyllis wrote this series of forty-seven reflections to commemorate their streets experience, elaborate further on practicing presence, and continue to bear witness to those who are homeless. Each reflection is based on an excerpt from The Emptiness of Our Hand...

Western Questions Eastern Answers: A Collection of Short Essays

by Ashish Dalela

Why did I choose to name this collection “Western Questions, Eastern Answers”? Philosophy and science in the West have largely been practiced with the aim to understand the present world. A number of theories have been propounded, none of which are free of problems. Philosophy and science in the East (specifically the Vedic tradition) has always been practiced with the aim to transcend the world. Vedic texts provide many theories, but always in answer to a transcendental question. On one hand, therefore, we have questions that haven’t found good answers. On the other, there are very good answers that haven’t been connected to the burning questions of mankind today.Combining them makes a lot of sense from both sides, although I believe this type of approach to a ‘synthesis’ of r...

Chinatown No More: Taiwan Immigrants in Contemporary New York (The Anthropology of Contemporary Issues)

by Hsiang-Shui Chen

By focusing on the social and cultural life of post-1965 Taiwan immigrants in Queens, New York, this book shifts Chinese American studies from ethnic enclaves to the diverse multiethnic neighborhoods of Flushing and Elmhurst. As Hsiang-shui Chen documents, the political dynamics of these settlements are entirely different from the traditional closed Chinese communities; the immigrants in Queens think of themselves as living in "worldtown," not in a second Chinatown. Drawing on interviews with members of a hundred households, Chen brings out telling aspects of demography, immigration experience, family life, and gender roles, and then turns to vivid, humanistic portraits of three families. Chen also describes the organizational life of the Chinese in Queens with a lively account of the powe...

Franz Kafka: The Necessity of Form

by Stanley Corngold

In Stanley Corngold’s view, the themes and strategies of Kafka’s fiction are generated by a tension between his concern for writing and his growing sense of its arbitrary character. Analyzing Kafka’s work in light of "the necessity of form," which is also a merely formal necessity, Corngold uncovers the fundamental paradox of Kafka’s art and life. The first section of the book shows how Kafka’s rhetoric may be understood as the daring project of a man compelled to live his life as literature. In the central part of the book, Corngold reflects on the place of Kafka within the modern tradition, discussing such influential precursors of Cervantes, Flaubert, and Nietzsche, whose works display a comparable narrative disruption. Kafka’s distinctive narrative strategies, Corngold poin...
