A History of Male Psychological Disorders in Britain, 1945-1980 (Mental Health in Historical Perspective)

by Alison Haggett

This book is open access under a CC BY license.Statistically, women appear to suffer more frequently from depressive and anxiety disorders, featuring more regularly in primary care figures for consultations, diagnoses and prescriptions for psychotropic medication. This has been consistently so throughout the post-war period with current figures suggesting that women are approximately twice more likely to suffer from affective disorders than men. However, this book suggests that the statistical landscape reveals only part of the story. Currently, 75 per cent of suicides are among men, and this trend can also be traced back historically to data that suggests this has been the case since the beginning of the twentieth-century. This book suggests that male psychological illness was in fact no ...

The ground is shifting. New research programs, and new discoveries, are constantly changing the landscape of our knowledge of "how it all began." Read on your PC, Mac, smart phone, tablet, or Kindle device.

Do you frequently experience bouts of abdominal pains? Many people simply dismiss upset stomachs or abdominal pain, blaming a specific food that their "tummy didn’t agree with". Some are driven to seek relief by altogether reducing their food intake thus relieving their intestines from fullness. They think that decreasing the number o...

Walden (AmazonClassics Edition)

by Henry David Thoreau

At Walden Pond, Henry David Thoreau reflected on simpler living in the natural world. By removing himself from the distractions of materialism, Thoreau hoped to not only improve his spiritual life but also gain a better understanding of society through solitary introspection. In Walden, Thoreau condenses his two-year, two-month, two-day stay into a single year, using the four seasons to symbolize human development—a cycle of life shared by both nature and man. A celebration of personal renewal through self-reliance, independence, and simplicity, composed for all of us living in “quiet desperation,” Walden is eternal.Revised edition: Previously published as Walden, this edition of Walden (AmazonClassics Edition) includes editorial revisions....

A History of Self-Harm in Britain: A Genealogy of Cutting and Overdosing (Mental Health in Historical Perspective)

by Chris Millard

This book is open access under a CC BY license and is the first account of self-harming behaviour in its proper historical and political context. The rise of self-cutting and overdosing in the 20th century is linked to the sweeping changes in mental and physical health, and wider political context. The welfare state, social work, Second World War, closure of the asylums, even the legalization of suicide, are all implicated in the prominence of self harm in Britain. The rise of 'overdosing as a cry for help' is linked to the integration of mental and physical healthcare, the NHS, and the change in the law on suicide and attempted suicide. The shift from overdosing to self-cutting as the most prominent 'self-damaging' behaviour is also explained, linked to changes in hospital organization an...

The First Periodic Table for Elementary Particles

by Richard Lighthouse

This is a significant breakthrough in elementary particle physics. This paper presents the complete table of 1024 elementary particles based on the QAM model as the first Periodic Table for Elementary Particles. A 1024-QAM table is presented that graphically displays how all elementary particles are related, similar to the Standard Periodic Table in chemistry. Interestingly, the math that describes QAM is simple and elegant. If we line up all of the particle masses in order, we find there are a number of “gaps.” These are called the mass gaps, and they line up perfectly with 1024-QAM. QAM is very simple – it is the math used for wifi signals, and it perfectly fits the sequence of elementary particle masses. Numerous other particles are predicted using 1024-QAM. This paper provides co...

To what extent do regional socioeconomic processes influence the level of ecosystem pressure being exerted by indigenous groups? In Manu National Park, one of the most important protected areas of the Peruvian rainforest, increments in the levels of environmental pressure have been associated with an increased disruption of the traditional livelihoods of the indigenous population, created mostly by the intensification of regional socioeconomic activities and changes in their settlement patterns. This short book examines the variation in the levels of ecological pressure created by indigenous groups, focusing on the socioeconomic drivers of indigenous environmental behavior in this critical natural habitat....

Actors and the Art of Performance: Under Exposure (Performance Philosophy)

by Susanne Granzer

Actors and the Art of Performance: Under Exposure combines the author's two main biographical paths: her professional commitment to the fields of both theatre and philosophy. The art of acting on stage is analysed here not only from the theoretical perspective of a spectator, but also from the perspective of the actor. The author draws on her experience as both a theatre actor and a university professor whose teachings in the art of acting rely heavily on her own experience and also on her philosophical knowledge. The book is unique not only in terms of its content but also in terms of its style. Written in a multiplicity of voices, the text oscillates between philosophical reasoning and narrative forms of writing, including micro-narratives, fables, parables, and inter alia by Carroll, Ho...

What is education’s purpose in this new reality? What and how must we learn now? The volatility and uncertainty caused by digitalization, globalization, and climate change weave a common backdrop through each chapter. Using case studi...

Rethinking Interdisciplinarity across the Social Sciences and Neurosciences

by F. Callard

This book offers a provocative account of interdisciplinary research across the neurosciences, social sciences and humanities. Setting itself against standard accounts of interdisciplinary 'integration,' and rooting itself in the authors' own experiences, the book establishes a radical agenda for collaboration across these disciplines. Rethinking Interdisciplinarity does not merely advocate interdisciplinary research, but attends to the hitherto tacit pragmatics, affects, power dynamics, and spatial logics in which that research is enfolded. Understanding the complex relationships between brains, minds, and environments requires a delicate, playful and genuinely experimental interdisciplinarity, and this book shows us how it can be done. This book is open access under a CC-BY license and f...
