At the same time, advances in printing technology allowed publishers to print high-quality art images on their sheet music covers, which acted as an advertisement for the sheet music. by Gisel Costa

The Eras: The Baroque Story is an innovative and interactive book that empowers children with the understanding of practice. This is a children’s historical book that introduces music, art, and literature during the Baroque Period. Baroque history was a wonderful time for the arts. She reads that through their dedication, the composers wrote over hundreds of classical pieces that are still played today. This piece brings out artists such as Poussin, Caravaggio, Rubens, and Rembrandt, who also contributed so much of their works through practice. This manuscript may appeal to children who show an interest in ...

by Paul Gilbertson

(Guitar) String Theory gives guitar players all they need to know about how to makes an electric guitar play better, sound better, and make us better guitar players. Poorly set up instruments are difficult to play and generate a sound and tone that are a poor reward for hard work. The Super Cluster Method For Guitar: A Full Knowledge Of The Fretboard

by Daniel D. Barber

One hour to learn the fretboard. That's all it takes.By the end of the fourth lesson of this method, usually an hour or less, the student has essentially learned the entire fretboard and will know the location of six out of the seven natural tones of the C major scale. A fifth lesson adds the last note and the sixth lesson helps the student cement the knowledge into their mind. This method works equally well for children as it does for adults and for older guitar players who have yet to 'memorize' the fretboard.Additionally, this method frees the student from the limiting factors of the various other methods of learning scales. Now they are no longer limited by a four or five fret horizon like found in the CAGED or Zone systems....

How To Make Money As A Touring Musician: (Or ANY Touring Performer)

by Larry Whitler

When the passion to create music first appears it is usually about the music and not about the money that can be made from it. In fact, for many, making money with music is not even necessary. If, however, you have been making music and have been playing in small bars or coffee houses waiting for that "big break" while taking home tips or a small stipend AND you would like to be able to earn a better income while waiting for that break, then this book might have the practical tips (and connections) that could make a big difference for you. This is not a "get rich quick" with music book. This is also...

Garage Band Theory – GBTool 08 Chord Progressions: excerpt from Garage Band Theory: Tools the Pros Use to Play by Ear (Garage Band Theory - Tools the Pro's Use to Play by Ear Book 9)

by Duke Sharp

Everything in this book came from Garage Band Theory and there's loads more useful stuff there.

When I first started trying to explain how people can play songs by ear, this is where I began.

I thought that if a player understands that the vast majority of the music we hear is based around about five patterns, which are called chord progressions, and then they learn those patterns they'd be off and running.

Not a bad idea, but what happened is that the student would not really know exactly what a chord is, which has to be explained in the context of a scale... and they wouldn't know what a scale is ... and so on. Turns out this is one of those times that a coherent explanation can't really start in the middle.

But the basic premise is ab...

The Beginner's Guide to Microphones

by Brendan Krueger

In the digital era, when most of the bulky hardware of early recording studios is considered unnecessary, the impact of the microphone is often overlooked by the amateur in the recording equation. Different microphones pick up different sounds at different volumes from different directions. This means that your choice of microphones can drastically alter the sound of a recording. For the musician and/or recording engineer who strives for quality, even for recording something as casual as a demo tape, a fundamental knowledge of how different microphones function and how to best use them is key for creating truly exceptional recordings. This book is meant to teach the reader, who may know next to nothing about microphones, how to choose the proper microphone for any situation. The author, a ...

The Catholic Organist's Quarterly: Summer - Manuals Only

by Noel Jones

Sacred Music Library is proud to present the last in our first series of books of organ music for the Liturgical Year. After the great Feasts of Easter and Pentecost, and the solemnity of Trinity Sunday and Corpus Christi, we embark upon the long summer and fall days of Ordinary Time, which can seem to stretch inexorably into a never-ending future. Without an overarching “theme” it can be a challenge to keep a sense of musical direction in a period where there are few feast days. Noel Jones has met this challenge and has succeeded in creating a truly useful selection of pieces that will make Ordinary Time fizz with interest and musical satisfaction. When Noel first talked about this project with me, we both agreed that it would be great to “over deliver”. By that, we wanted to see...

My Raging Case of Beastie Fever

by Matt Burns

The year is 1987. A young Matt Burns is home sick from kindergarten. He’s tired of watching daytime cartoons like “Thunder Cats” and “Gummy Bears”. He makes sure his mom isn’t around…he sneakily switches the channel to MTV…and what he sees will change his life forever:It’s three rappers and they’re crashing some nerdy house party. These guys are rude and crude and, most strikingly, they’re…white? Wait-whaaa? Rappers? White?! This is strange. This is something Burns has never seen before. He’s fascinated and can’t look away. In fact, he pretty much won’t look away for about 30 years…When you look up “Beastie Boys super-fan” in the dictionary (it’s in there, trust me), you will find a picture of Matt Burns. Over the years, he has performed both “Sure S...

Stealth Jazz Part II: Educational Dystopia

by TOM SMITH

According to ‘DownBeat' Hall of Fame inductee Tom Smith, education almost single-handedly rescued jazz, then neutered it for reasons having little to do with music. In his opinion, twenty-first century jazz is a misguided art form lacking the willingness to innovate, while some educators favor appeasement through membership in academic tribes, that stifle creativity, amid environments equally divided between ‘hucksterism’ and sincerity. All the while, university tuitions rise, high school programs lose funding, and a larger number ask, “What’s the point?” Still, despite conflict and unnecessary travails, jazz education fights to persevere in muddled and uncertain times. Like its predecessor 'Stealth Jazz: Behind the Curtain, ‘Stealth Jazz Part II’ offers largely anecdotal/ ...

And then I remember my assignment: a four-issue feature on Dax Thatcher. . .and his supermodel fiancée. Yep, he’s getting hitched. I have to f...

Playing the Piano for the Rest of Us...: How to Play Chord Music on the Piano

by Victor Aramanda

"Playing the Piano for the rest of us" is a course created for people who want to play the piano without having to commit to years of study and practice before being able to play songs they really want to.

Finally a piano course for people who want to play with other musicians without having to learn to read sheet music, to enjoy themselves or be included in groups, like church groups or bands, or just friends and family.

I like the saying, “Give a man a fish, feed him for a day. Teach him to fish, feed him for ...

In the years following Costello’s searing live performances with his band The Attractions and his insightful and eclectic songwriting, taking in love, hate, romance and social commentary, established him as the pre-eminent interpreter of the human condition in popular music. 1982’s poetic and poignant Shipbuilding remains one of the most cutting indictments of the Thatcher era e...
