Chinatown No More: Taiwan Immigrants in Contemporary New York (The Anthropology of Contemporary Issues)

by Hsiang-Shui Chen

By focusing on the social and cultural life of post-1965 Taiwan immigrants in Queens, New York, this book shifts Chinese American studies from ethnic enclaves to the diverse multiethnic neighborhoods of Flushing and Elmhurst. As Hsiang-shui Chen documents, the political dynamics of these settlements are entirely different from the traditional closed Chinese communities; the immigrants in Queens think of themselves as living in "worldtown," not in a second Chinatown. Drawing on interviews with members of a hundred households, Chen brings out telling aspects of demography, immigration experience, family life, and gender roles, and then turns to vivid, humanistic portraits of three families. Chen also describes the organizational life of the Chinese in Queens with a lively account of the powe...

Visual Antietam Vol. 1: Ezra Carman’s Antietam Through Maps and Pictures: Dawn to Dunker Church

by Ezra A. Carman

Modern students of the Battle of Antietam owe a large debt to Ezra A. Carman. Colonel of the 13th New Jersey Infantry and then brigade commander, he devoted much of his later life to preserving the history of the battle and the newly established National Battlefield Park. Included in these efforts was a manuscript detailing the Maryland Campaign of 1862, written with extensive input from surviving veterans from both sides. Unpublished during his lifetime, it has since been released in several versions. The Visual Antietam series publishes Carman's manuscript with a heavy emphasis on maps and photographs. Visual Antietam Vol. 1: Ezra Carman’s Antietam Through Maps and Pictures: Dawn to Dunker Church contains sixty-three (63) images, both period and modern, allowing the reader to see th...

Power, Protection, and Free Trade: International Sources of U.S. Commercial Strategy, 1887–1939 (Cornell Studies in Political Economy)

by David A. Lake

Why do nations so frequently abandon unrestricted international commerce in favor of trade protectionism? David A. Lake contends that the dominant explanation, interest group theory, does not adequately explain American trade strategy or address the contradictory elements of cooperation and conflict that shape the international economy. Power, Protection, and Free Trade offers an alternative, systemic approach to trade strategy that builds on the interaction between domestic and international factors. In this innovative book, Lake maintains that both protection and free trade are legitimate and effective instruments of national policy, the considered responses of nations to varying international structures....

From his earliest days on the frontier, he endured the loss of his beloved mother and the demanding physical challenges of a rough-and-ready land where death came easily and education was rare; where ambition was rewarded if a man proved himself willing to work hard; where ...

Observations of a Northern Democrat: The Civil War Letters of 1st Lt. Lewis Ramsey to His Family in Pennsylvania, 1861 - 1863

by Lewis Ramsey

Lewis Ramsey was a 23-year-old farmer in Norristown, Pennsylvania, when the Civil War broke out in 1861. Confederate forces attacked Fort Sumter on April 12, and in just over a week Ramsey was mustered into the Union Army. He wrote the 29 letters in this book to his family back home in Montgomery County during two terms of service (with the 4th Regiment Pennsylvania Volunteers and 175th Regiment Pennsylvania Infantry). Ramsey is an example of a Northern Democrat who held anti-abolitionist views. He was not alone; political positions, religious beliefs, and racism fueled Northern opposition to the War. Ramsey saw relatively little military action, but he spent 12 months in the Army, did a substantial amount of traveling with his regiment, and was frequently able to “take a look around.”...

A Tale of Two Nations: Canada, U.S. and WWI

by Melina Druga

In our 24/7 news cycle, it is difficult to imagine a time when news reports were often days old, when stories weren’t necessarily confirmed and when colorful language permeated articles. During World War 1, that’s exactly how newspapers in Canada and the United States reported events locally and aboard.A Tale of Two Nations focuses on the start of the war and key events from 1915-1918. It examines events not through the lens of hindsight and analysis but as they occurred. In A Tale of Two Nations, you’ll read about:•1914: War begins in Europe•1915: The Second Battle of Ypres and sinking of the Lusitania•1916: The Battle of the Somme and the U.S. presidential election•1917: The Battle of Vimy Ridge and the United States enters the war•1918: The war ends and the Spanish...

The 1865 Fall of Richmond in Pictures

by Charles A Mills

Captured in pictures. The last death agonies of the Confederacy: By late afternoon it seemed that all who could leave the city were stampeding. Commissary stores were thrown open, and their hoarded contents distributed to eager crowds. As the day wore on the scenes at the various government stores changed from the fairly orderly distribution of supplies to rank plundering. Whiskey stocks were broken into and the streets ran with liquor. Factories, arsenals and mills were ordered destroyed, some were blown up, and others were burned. The fires were soon out of control. Admiral Raphael Semmes wrote, “The Tredegar Iron Works were on fire, and continual explosions of loaded shell stored there were taking place....The population was in a great state of alarm.” Admiral Semmes ...

Star-Crossed: A Quantitative Reassessment of the Relative Combat Performance of the Army of Tennessee Compared to the Army of Northern Virginia

Everyone KNOWS the Army of Northern Virginia was a "winner" and its sister army, the Army of Tennessee was a "loser," right? In his book, Two Great Rebel Armies: An Essay in Confederate Military History, Richard M. Sweet Land of Liberty: Old Times in the Colonies

by Charles Carleton Coffin

"The settlement of our country was the beginning of a new era in human affairs. The people of England, ever since the days of King John, when the barons compelled him to sign the Magna Charta in the meadow of Runnymede, had struggled against tyranny; and when the emigrants sailed across the Atlantic to rear their homes in Virginia and New England, it was the transplanting of liberty to a continent where everything was new, and where the conditions that surrounded them were wholly unlike those of the Old World. This volume is an outline of some of the principal events that transpired during the colonial period of our country, and portrays the ardships and sufferings of those who laid the foundations of a new empire. It will show how the Old World laws, habits, and customs were gradually chan...

The REAL Roosevelts: An Omitted History: What PBS & Ken Burns Didn't Tell You

by M King

In the pantheon of American heroes, few names are more revered than that of 'Roosevelt'. As the decades pass into the century mark, the recent works of "historians" such as Doris Kearns Goodwin and film producer Ken Burns have exalted the Holy Trinity of Roosevelt to demi-god status.

There was Theodore, hero of San Juan Hill, builder of the Panama Canal, scourge of the big bad "Robber Barons", and tireless champion of "the worker" whose manly image is immortalized in the stone of Mount Rushmore.

There was Franklin, the altruistic savior of America who turned against his own class to serve "the common man". FDR, we are told, saved America, and indeed, the world. For that, his own image is immortalized on every American dime.

And finally, there was E...

Clara Brown: The Rags to Riches True Story of a Freed Slave of Central City, Colorado

by Julie McDonald

The wonderful and inspiring story of Clara Brown, 1800-1885, is one of my all-time favorite stories! At age 36 Clara was separated from her beloved husband Richard and three children on the auction block. After being freed at the age of 57, she begins a tireless search for her only remaining family member, her daughter Eliza Jane. Clara worked her way west on a wagon train bound for Colorado by doing laundry and cooking for 26 single men who were on the wagon train. What Clara accomplishes in her 28 years of freedom will simply astound you! I first wrote about Clara Brown in my book Unbreakable Dolls, Too. This single story eBook is the expanded version, with much more information and 9 photos....

It further recounts Mary’s efforts in securing racial equality throughout her lifetime. This story was written during the summer of 2017 after spending a few glorious afternoons speaking wi...

Grant and his Army of the Tennessee were closing in.Trying to serve two masters, Pemberton had been reticent to move the Confederate army out of the Vicksburg defenses to find and attack Grant. In 1951, while war was raging in Korea, the United States began signing defense pacts with nations in the Pacific, intending to create alliances that would contain the spread of Communism. As the Korean War was winding down, America joined the Southeast Asia Treaty Organization, pledging to defend several nations in the region from Communist aggression. South Texas Drag

by Tony Molina

Take a trip through the South Texas terrain through the eyes of drug runner, Toño Garcia. His distinctive South Texas slang adds a unique charm to this dark story, but the appeal and originality doesn't stop there. This guy knows more about style than Carrie Bradshaw, which adds massive flavor and a whole new twist to a tale about "crime as a way of life" in South Texas.Toño sets the mood of every scene by describing the sagebrush and cactuses, the 100-degree heat, the dusty roads, and winding rivers. He sets the mood, too, cluing us into memories, his history. These tales--from the time he had to smuggle prize-winning horse jizz across the border, to the 55-gallon tanks that serve as human caskets for his "colleagues" the Bass brothers when drug deals go wrong--come to...

The Facebook Chronicles: Prophesies, Rants, Rages and Wisdom From The Obama Years

by Dr. Rayna Gangi

I came onto the internet a novice and got involved with social media in an effort to stay connected to the kids in my life. I had to learn the hard way that not everything on the internet is true, much is plagiarized, and a lot can just disappear at a moment’s notice.
