“Digging into the past, mining its moments, trying to piece them together this way and that, dusting off each memory of Natasha, of how we were, the highs and lows of the music of us, to find out where the problem may have started?”

To their son, Ben, that may seem like an exercise in futility. For Lenny, it is a necessary process of discovery, one that is as tormenting as it i...

E. F. Benson: The Complete Supernatural Stories (50+ tales of horror and mystery: The Bus-Conductor, The Room in the Tower, Negotium Perambulans, The Man ... The Thing in the Hall, Caterpillars...)

by E. F. Benson

Edward Frederic Benson (1867-1940) was an English novelist, biographer, memoirist, archaeologist and short story writer, best known now for the Mapp and Lucia series, written relatively late in his career. Benson was also known as a writer of atmospheric, oblique, and at times humorous or satirical ghost stories. His 1906 short story "The Bus-Conductor", a fatal-crash premonition tale about a person haunted by a hearse driver, has been adapted several times, notably in 1944 (in the film Dead of Night and as an anecdote in Bennett Cerf's Ghost Stories anthology published the same year) and in a 1961 episode of The Twilight Zone. H. P. Lovecraft spoke highly of Benson’s works in his “Supernatural Horror in Literature”, most notably of his story The Man Who Went Too Far....

No Other Recourse: A Pride and Prejudice Variation

by Emmeline Ashe

What if Mr. Darcy stumbled upon Miss Elizabeth Bennet… in a brothel? No Other Recourse is a short novella, a variation on our beloved Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. In the fanfiction tradition, Emmeline Ashe takes a "what if" approach on the classic story, and wonders what would happen if...What if Jane's letter arrived to Lambton earlier that fateful morning? When Mr. Darcy arrived, instead of finding a tearful Elizabeth prepared to disclose her family's troubles, he would instead have found her already departed, with no word or excuse. Our hero would then be wholly ignorant of his beloved's predicament, and therefore incapable of saving her family and reputation. What if the Bennet family were then propelled into a series of misfortunes that left our heroine in a most precarious pos...

The Moonstone: Special 'Magic' Edition

by Wilkie Collins

The Moonstone was described by T. S. Eliot as "the first and greatest of English detective novels." Published in 1868, it is one of the two books (with The Woman in White) for which Collins is most famous. Several incidents in the story are taken from the real life Constance Kent Road Case and the plot is Collins at his diabolical best. Many of the story's elements have since become classic features of the detective novel: the eventual conviction of the least-likely suspect; a bungling investigation led by local police and taken over by a more perceptive, slightly eccentric detective, the idea of a 'mcguffin' or object (in this case a diamond) that everyone wants and around which the plot pivots - to name but a few of the classic tropes first seen here....
