The Beast of Birkenshaw: Life of Serial Killer Peter Manuel (Serial Killers Book 7)

by Jack Smith

Some serial killers seem surreal, as if it's almost impossible to believe that an individual could do such horrific crimes. The Beast of Birkenshaw, a.k.a. Peter Manuel, was such an individual man.

Peter Manuel was Scotland’s first serial killer and certainly the country’s most notorious mass murderer. But he was so much more than that. As well as the horrific nature of his murders, which killed men, women, and children, he possessed a constant arrogance and a swift intelligence that often allowed him to operate right underneath the noses of the local law enforcement. Always happy to embarrass the police in Glasgow and the surrounding area, he waged a lifelong battle of wits which ended with him being hanged.

But the legend of Peter Manuel lives on. He had a penchant not only for violent killings, but for having the audacity to represent himself in court. Sometimes, this was successful and sometimes it was not. But each time, he was noted for his deft ability to out manoeuvre the best police officers Glasgow had to offer. When he eventually faced his last court hearing, it was described in the tabloids as the Trial of the Century. In this book, we will attempt to look into the history of the killer and the reasons he might have had for carrying out his horrific series of crimes.

Throughout the various chapters of this book, we will meet the friends, the family members, and the enemies of Peter Thomas Anthony Manuel, the man described as having the names of the saints, but the heart of Satan himself. We will examine Manuel’s worst crimes, while exploring the background that made him into the man he was. We will even look at his obsession with outsmarting the authorities. If you would like to learn more about the life of Peter Manuel, this is the book for you.

Becoming Imperfect: From anxiety to compassion. From self-doubt to self-love. A career-hopping Gen Xer discovers what it means to be human in the age of technology.

by George Tsakraklides

As technology threatens to erode parts of our humanity, we have a unique opportunity to redefine what it means to be human: beyond jobs, careers, smartphones and keeping busy. Achieving this is not an option, but an obligation to our species and to the planet.Sometimes it takes an unfortunate event to realise this: loss, disappointment or personal defeat can be particularly painful: shaking us to our core, making us question our way of life, our entire belief system. It may even make us feel that the life we have been living was a lie.My journey out of anxiety opened up the world to me like I could never have imagined. It looked just like a postcard, but with blurred images of humans running like rats, desperately rushing to find their purpose: whether it was through making things, inventing technology, or destroying the environment. They all seemed to be extremely busy and completely unaware of their surroundings. I had allowed anxiety into my life from such an early age that I grew up used to its presence, always there propelling me towards success, like the friend who is your harshest critic but deep down wants the best for you. It had become a close family member. But just like a wall slowly growing brick by brick, it eventually reached a height where it was blocking my view. And it was closing in.I wrote this book as a warning for everyone concerned: anxiety is much more than just “stress”. It disconnects us from ourselves, people, the environment, our future and our inner purpose. In this book, I share with you my journey as a human through 4 decades of technological change. I share with you how my humbling experience with anxiety made me a better person in the end: more in touch with who I am, more compassionate to myself and others, and at peace with my imperfections. It helped me own up to my weaknesses and transform them into bravery, approaching life with a renewed sense of direction – or, learn to be equally comfortable with my indirection. It made me more human. If we don’t tackle the current epidemic of anxiety we are at risk of worsening the existential crisis humanity is experiencing. We may be weakening our spiritual compass, the one that was not included in the Google Maps app but lies deep inside of us. Without it we are capable of walking ourselves off a cliff without even realising it. Some of us are on the way to the cliff, others on the way back. Wherever you may be on this journey, I hope that this book lights your way like a beacon, helping you safely navigate to calm and sunny shores.

Dave Decides to Become a Superhero (The Amazing Adventures of Dave the Depressed Alcoholic Superhero Book 1)

by E.D. Wallace

My name's Dave, and I'm special...
I don't mean special like I needed extra attention at school, I'm not retarded. I mean like special powers. I can do stuff like fly, throw fat people really far or knock a giraffe out. To clarify, I haven't done the last two (just saying I could if I wanted). Also to be clear, I'm not mentally ill. Well, not officially anyway.
You're probably thinking my life must be awesome, full of crazy adventures, fame, fortune and glamour. You'd be wrong. I have a desk job and live at home with my wife and parents. That's my entire loathsome life. The only thing that gets me through the day is knowing that I can have a drink or two. Sometimes three. Okay four. Fine, five. Ten. It's usually at least ten, but that's a guess because by that point I have no idea what I've been doing, am doing, or going to do.
Recently though, I've been getting seriously agitated with the world. There's so much wrong and no-one's doing anything about it. I'm not just talking about crime, I'm talking about the bigger picture. You know, stuff like war, poverty, corruption and all that high level stuff. I'm thinking I could do something to help. I don't know what exactly, but I've got some mad skills that could be useful. I don't know what the consequences will be if I do this, but I'll just assume the worst...
I'll assume that I'm gonna brush shoulders with the dregs of society; murderers, rapists, traffickers, politicians and CEOs. I'll assume that I'm gonna upset a lot of nasty people, powerful people, people who will come after me. I'll assume I'm gonna get hurt, badly, maybe even die (if that's even possible). I'll assume my wife is going to get really annoyed at me.
On second thought maybe this is a bad idea. Maybe I should just stick to the day job and play happy families. Screw that, I'm doing this!
What people are saying about this book...
Great concept, mixing urban fantasy and sci-fi parts of a superhero with the stark reality of life. On one hand Dave can fly, on the other he doesn't know which way, so needs Google Maps!
If you liked the Hancock movie or Marvel and DC comics, this book's for you. Dave's like Superman with the childhood of Batman. Descriptions are brilliant, well written and immersive.
Dave's alcoholism and depression are depicted with depth and insight. Particularly the withdrawal symptoms parts. I wonder if the author works in the field or has personal experience. Either way, the book provides a wonderful escape (and it's free).
As a female reader I wasn't sure if I'd like this book but I loved it. Without stereotyping women, I generally go for romance and relationship based fiction, and this book actually provided that in scores (even though it's a super hero / fantasy / sci fi novel). The scenes with Dave and his wife are so nuanced and explore romance and relationships brilliantly. The author writes from the heart.
As an alcoholic and sufferer of depression, I can totally relate to Dave. Particularly his cravings and hangovers. Reading this was truly cathartic and peaceful. Funny too, always nice to have some comedy!
It's combines the style of a novel with the imagination of a comic book or graphic novel. The action and adventure is immersive, hilarious and brutal!
The scenes with Dave's therapist are so interesting. They cover fascinating topics that tie in perfectly with Dave's problems.
Not sure why the author is giving the book away for free, but I'm not complaining!
Spanning so many genres, from urban fantasy to science fiction to romance to comedy and adventure. And it's free!

Hoarding: Disorder for beginners - Basic Self-Help for Compulsive Hoarding and Acquiring - Hoarding 101 (Compulsive Behavior and Disorder - Accumulating things Book 1)

by Craig Donovan

What do you really know about Hoarding disorder? If you really want to understand and do something about it, continue reading!

Today only, get this Amazon bestseller for just $0.99. Regularly priced at $4.99. Read on your PC, Mac, smart phone, tablet or Kindle device.

This book will help you better understand Hoarding, and in particular compulsive hoarding, and see how you can deal with it. It has been written as a general overview outlining the main things you need to know about this subject. It's a short read and a great start for people who know little about the subject.

"I’ve always had trouble throwing things away. Magazines, newspapers, old clothes… What if I need them one day? I don’t want to risk throwing something out that might be valuable. The large piles of stuff in our house keep growing so it’s difficult to move around and sit or eat together as a family. "

"My husband is upset and embarrassed, and we get into horrible fights. I’m scared when he threatens to leave me. My children won’t invite friends over, and I feel guilty that the clutter makes them cry. But I get so anxious when I try to throw anything away. I don’t know what’s wrong with me, and I don’t know what to do."

This example is typical of someone who suffers from hoarding.

For those who hoard, the quantity of their collected items sets them apart from other people. Commonly hoarded items may be newspapers, magazines, paper and plastic bags, cardboard boxes, photographs, household supplies, food, and clothing.

People hoard because they believe that an item will be useful or valuable in the future. Or they feel it has sentimental value, is unique and irreplaceable, or too big a bargain to throw away. They may also consider an item a reminder that will jog their memory, thinking that without it they won’t remember an important person or event. Or because they can’t decide where something belongs, it’s better just to keep it.

Hoarding also causes anger, resentment, and depression among family members, and it can affect the social development of children. Unlivable conditions may lead to separation or divorce, eviction, and even loss of child custody. Hoarding may lead to serious financial problems, as well.

Hoarding is not the same as collecting. In general, collectors have a sense of pride about their possessions and they experience joy in displaying and talking about them. They usually keep their collection organized, feel satisfaction when adding to it, and budget their time and money.

Those who hoard usually experience embarrassment about their possessions and feel uncomfortable when others see them. They have clutter, often at the expense of livable space, feel sad or ashamed after acquiring additional items, and they are often in debt.

This book is here to introduce you to this painful problem!

Crystal meth is reported to be one of the most abused substances in the world. And although it isn't always easy to tell who is addicted to meth at first glance, given the statistics, it is very likely that you know someone who is. Crystal meth users are actually able to go about seemingly normal lives: They can maintain successful careers, or get decent enough grades to stay in school - at least until they get too deep into the addiction and it becomes too late. Now, if you are certain that you someone you love is abusing crystal meth, you may already realize that it's not going to be an easy journey to get them to overcome their addiction. This book is going to help you understand what your loved one is going through, and how to properly support them and help them get over the addiction. I will explain how to confirm whether or not someone is addicted to meth, and then what to do and - just as important - what not to do when talking to and relating to a user. You'll also learn when and how to get outside help, and exactly how to help a recovering addict avoid situations that could lead him back to the habit. Helping a loved one overcome an addiction is not an easy task, but it is a necessary one, and it all starts with knowing what to do.

Here Is A Preview Of What You'll Learn...What is Crystal Meth?Understanding the Inside of the Addict's MindWhat Causes a Person to Become Addicted Dealing with Short-Term Meth UseDealing with Long-Term EffectsHow to Help Successfully Endure Withdrawal PangsMuch, much more!Download your copy today!

God Is a Narcissist

by Tim Ozman

Is "God" the original "Big Brother?"God is a narcissistic construct. Elitists created the Bible and purposefully made God into a raging narcissist. This is the same concept demonstrated in the construct of Big Brother in Orwell's 1984. God is, therefore, a proxy by which those who control religions control your mind. How much control they have depends on how much you give them.

The Roving Mind: A Modern Approach to Cognitive Enhancement

by Anthony Simola

"[C]ognitive enhancement's return on investment [...] happens to be the motivation for The Roving Mind. There is a long tradition of improving one's mental function yet only in the latter half of the 20th century have the effects risen and the investment—time, risk, effort, and capital—decreased to such an extent that certain aspects of cognitive enhancement have become a worthwhile pursuit." The Roving Mind: A Modern Approach to Cognitive Enhancement is a guide to improving human intelligence. Detailing various methods from ancient Roman mnemonic techniques to scheduled pharmaceutical substances to brain-machine interfaces, Mr. Simola has produced a convicing treatise on the timely topic of cognitive enhancement.
