Garage Band Theory GBTool 02 Counting: excerpt from Garage Band Theory: Tools the Pros Use to Play by Ear (Garage Band Theory - Tools the Pro's Use to Play by Ear Book 3)

by Duke Sharp

No, this isn't the arithmetic chapter!

There's no addition, no subtraction, mostly just counting all the way up to 3 or 4.
Not too tough.

What you may not know is that we're not really counting objects, like notes, we're measuring time. Duration of the notes and the spaces between the notes.

You'll learn about whole notes, half notes, quarter, eighth, and sixteenth notes, you'll learn what all the time signatures mean, you'll learn what a pickup measure is and how to use a metronome.

And of course there's a nice collection of exercises using familiar songs.

There's an excellent introduction to learning to read rhythm, and a quiz at the end so you can measure your progress. (use a separate sheet of paper for your answers)

This is non Academic, practical, useful theory for living-room pickers and working musicians who want to be able to think coherently about music in order to ask questions and understand answers about the music they want to play.

The stuff in GBT is about understanding The Beatles and The Rolling Stones, Cole Porter and Duke Ellington, The Grateful Dead and Vampire Weekend.

It's NOT about analyzing Bach Fugues... but you'll be able to if you want to.

It was written for the 99% of musicians who are NOT music majors by a incorrigible honky-tonk guitar player who plays by ear ... but understands the relevant vocabulary and what's sensible and useful for MOST players.

"Garage Band Theory is a must for any musician." Rodney Crowell

"Don't be put off by this giant book - Duke's got the secrets of the universe in here. Quite simply, this is the most comprehensive book on music theory I've ever seen."
Bill Payne (Little Feat)

"Something for every musician at any level. Especially helpful is the musical notation and tablature for a variety of instruments. This book inspires me to learn and practice more."
Sam Bush

"Garage Band Theory is a veritable encyclopedia of useful tools and tips. This book lifts the lid off the "black box" of music theory and let's the light shine in - and in a fun, practical way.
This is a book which should be left handily lying around the living room, bedside, studio, classroom, (restroom?) - ready to be dipped into at any time for reference purposes or just to improve or refresh one's fluency in the language of music.
A great resource for musicians young and old no matter what your training. For the price of a one-hour lesson, GBT offers a lifetime of learning."
Alasdair Fraser

"Garage Band Theory let me know how little I know... but in a good way. It's a great book!" Sterling C Ball CEO, Ernie Ball Inc.

"This book is written in the people's key." Kostas

"Garage Band Theory offers you everything you need to know to understand, play and make your own music. Because he is both an accomplished musician and teacher, Sharp's Garage Band Theory is an excellent guide for beginners and more advanced players alike."

Garage Band Theory – GBTool 16 Sight Singing & Solfege: excerpt from Garage Band Theory - Tools the Pro's Use to Play by Ear

by Duke Sharp

Everything in this book came from Garage Band Theory and there's loads more useful stuff there.

If you've ever thought you might like to learn to read music, the 27 songs in this exercise are great place to start.

Most people are familiar with do-re-mi-fa-sol-la-ti-do, but most don't realize that it's part of a system called solfege and is a simple substitution code that will usually contain the melody of nearly any song you might want to learn.

With examples like Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, Mary Had a Little Lamb, Auld Lang Syne, Deck The Halls, Are You Sleeping Brother John?, Oh Tannenbaum, Oh Susannah, Silent Night and Greensleeves, you won't have to learn the songs, you can hum along while you look at the page and learn the technique. Easy.

This is a useful step on the path to figuring songs out by ear, because if you replace the solfege syllables with the corresponding chord numbers, it will often be the correct chords.

DO=1 RE=2m MI=3m FA=4 SOL=5 LA=6m TI=7dim

If these numbers I've shown for chords are mysterious, then you might want to have a look at Garage Band Theory - Chapter 11 - Chord Progressions

No matter which instrument you want to play, the advice, inspiration and down-to-earth tips in this book will help you get to your goal.

Duke Sharp draws on a lifetime of experience playing, writing, recording and teaching music.

Garage Band Theory demystifies music theory and, in the process, shows how to apply basic music theory to the art of playing by ear and composition.

A Mess of Help: From The Crucified Soul of Rock N' Roll

by David W.F. Zahl

In his debut book, writer and blogger David Zahl riffs on the intersection of music, memoir, and theology to create a fresh and colorful series of essays that truly stands alone. Constructed like an album, A Mess of Help surveys some of pop’s most eccentric icons in hopes of finding answers to both the small questions (“Who am I?”) and the big ones (“What about Michael Jackson?”), unearthing timeless wisdom even as it entertains. So if you’ve ever wondered how fundamentalism sparked Guns N’ Roses, what ABBA can do for your marriage, or why Brian Wilson built his sandbox, open your heart and drop the needle.

The New Joyful Sounds: A Portrait of Gospel Music and The Melody

by Ronnie Barnes

Gospel music is one of the clearest reflections of African American worship, and the music is also deeply rooted in the history of America. Black churches in the South began using music in their services toward the end of the nineteenth century. The practice quickly took root and spawned gospel as a popular category. In The New Joyful Sounds, Ronnie Kennedy Barnes traces the history of that music. As a gospel singer himself and a student of the genre, he is eminently qualified to do so. Barnes breaks down the category into four distinct variations: quartet style, traditional gospel, contemporary gospel, and praise and worship. The focus of this book is the quartet, in which male voices sing together in tight harmonies. The title refers to a classic quartet founded by Reverend Milton Brown and Howard Jones in 1989. Through a combination of songs, personal experience, and research into the history and social impact of the quartet, Barnes makes that music come alive. For anyone who has used gospel music as a vehicle to express or experience the good news of Jesus Christ, this book is required reading.

BC Guitar

by Samuel Larson

Welcome to Beginning Contemporary Guitar, As a teacher, I've observed that new students vary widely in age and past experience. Some students have played an instrument and have learned to read music but are new to the guitar. Others may have some experience with the guitar but no formal training in the language of music. And some students have never played a musical instrument. No matter which background applies to you, if you're taking this course, then you've decided to start from the beginning to develop a solid foundation with both the guitar and reading music. The materials list for this course has three required elements:1) You'll need a six string acoustic or electric guitar, 2) A medium gauge guitar plectrum (guitar pick), 3) And a computer, laptop, or handheld electronic device. This course is offered in digital format, and some of the course material includes interactive audio/visual media. In order to take full advantage of the interactive elements, be sure to use a device with audio/video capability. Thank you for choosing this coursework for your lessons. After many years of watching new students develop into musicians, I strongly believe that a program which embraces the language of music is the best beginning for a lifetime of musical fulfillment.Samuel Larson

Picturing Prince: An Intimate Portrait

by

PICTURING PRINCE sees the late icon's former art director, STEVE PARKE, revealing stunning intimate photographs of the singer from his time working at Paisley Park. At least half of the images in the book are exclusively published here for the first time; most other images in the book are rare to the public eye.Alongside these remarkable images are fifty engaging, poignant and often funny written vignettes by Parke, which reveal the very human man behind the reclusive superstar: from shooting hoops to renting out movie theatres at 4am; from midnight requests for camels to meaningful conversations that shed light on Prince as a man and artist. STEVE PARKE started working with Prince in 1988, after a mutual friend showed Prince some of Steve's photorealistic paintings. He designed everything from album covers and merchandise to sets for Prince's tours and videos. Somewhere in all of this, he became Paisley Park's official art director. He began photographing Prince at the request of the star himself, and continued to do so for the next several years. The images in this book are the arresting result of this collaboration.

365 Self Discipline Quotes: Daily Self Discipline Quotes to Build Lasting Habits, Mental Toughness and Achieve Your Goals

by Xabier K. Fernao

Shocking Statistics: An Average American Reads 1 Book a Year and 50% of those are Romance Novels…Look! I do not know who you are but I am sure you are on this page right now because you are someone who wants more. You are someone who do not settle for average. You see, I totally understand the desire to want to learn and yet dread reading a long and thick book at the same time! That is why we created this book…More about this book:“We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence then is not an act but a habit” – AristotleWhat is the #1 delineating factor between the poor and rich, the successful and unsuccessful, the happy and unhappy people? Self-discipline. Think about it.When you’re not disciplined about your work/job, you’ll stack up work and eventually you’ll be stressed out and burnt out. When you’re not disciplined about your finance, you’ll stack up unnecessary expenses and debt and eventually be financially stressed and burnt out.You get the idea. However, what’s the deal with a “365 Days Self Discipline Quotes” book?Do you agree that mindset is 80% and the strategies and mechanics are only 20% when it comes to achieving success? You know what I mean. People are always chasing the 20%, the fanciful stuffs, and thinking that ONE big idea is going to get them disciplined. It is however, all the daily reminders, influence and environment that gets people disciplined and committed every single day. I do not know what you are trying to achieve.Maybe it is your desired body, having that six packs you’ve always wanted.Maybe it is a breakthrough in your business, adding one more zero behind the annual income this year.It doesn’t matter. What I know about you, though, is that you are someone who wants more. And that is pretty damn awesome. You want more money, more health, more happiness, more sex, more pleasure, more knowledge and more freedom… and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that.Life is about growing and expanding ourselves. We are either growing a little each day or dying a little each day. I give you my deepest respect for wanting to choose the uphill path, the path of growth and self-discipline. Garage Band Theory GBTool 01 Note Names: excerpt from Garage Band Theory: Tools the Pros Use to Play by Ear (Garage Band Theory - Tools the Pro's Use to Play by Ear Book 2)

by Duke Sharp

Although there are hundreds of different instruments, for what we know as “Western” music there are only a total of seven different notes that are used.

They're produced by different mechanisms so the noise is different, but the notes remain the same whether you're playing an oboe or a banjo.

The included diagrams and explanations make it easy to see how similar all the stringed instruments are and how they all relate to the keyboard and the quiz at the end will ensure you've learned the info.

This is one chapter taken from Garage Band Theory, so you may want to consider the entire thing, will save you money.

Garage Band Theory – GBTool 12 Intro to Scales: Music theory for non music majors, livingroom pickers and working musicians who want to think & speak coherently ... Tools the Pro's Use to Play by

by Duke Sharp

Introduction to Scales for Guitar and Mandolin
(it's really pretty easy and worth the trouble)

Everything in this book came from Garage Band Theory and there's loads more there.
Just about every musician has at some point thought that they should probably learn some scales and practice them.

But almost no one ever does.

I think that's partly because it's not clear WHY.

There's at least two excellent reasons to practice scales.

The obvious one is that it's good for coordination with both hands. The goal is to remove the physical obstacles that might impede a musical idea from materializing.

It doesn't take long with any of these forms before you're able to play them with your eyes closed ... and that's exactly what you want, because then you're LISTENING to what you play, not watching your fingers wiggle.

The vast, overwhelming majority of melodies in music are constructed out of scale tones from one of five scales.

The second reason is that it's great ear training. When you can play the scales well enough to hear them inside your head, then you can hum a tune and figure out the chords while you're strolling down the avenue.

I start with abbreviated 5 note examples of the scales in the open positions because that's enough. Then they're moved up the neck in to moveable forms with no open strings. Then you'll learn to link them together.

There's several well known examples that illustrate just how most melodies can be found in the scales, and they're tabbed in four different places on the guitar neck, as well as two different tabs for mandolin.

This is practical theory for living-room pickers and working musicians who want to be able to think coherently about music in order to ask questions and understand answers about the music they want to play.

Beyond the arpeggios: A cancer in F-Flat Major

by María José Voltes

Cancer acts without you noticing, without mercy, without asking for any kind of permission. Behind my illness lay intense life lessons which I wanted to preserve and share within these pages.Apart from writing, my other greatest passion is music. I have studied it, I have interpreted it and, up until this day, I continue enjoying it as an important part of my life. I have considered that it would be nice to explain this difficult life experience from a different point of view, not trying to advise anyone, nor insisting on the worn out list of recommendations. The great concerts for piano have been my companions in this strange trip and they have become my support to summon the courage to reveal how I felt during those circumstances. In this solidarity book I would like to express my gratitude to all the help I received, contributing with these pages and my personal memories to the fight against cancer.

The Big Book of Vintage Sheet Music Covers: A Kindle Coffee Table Book

by Douglas DeLong

HUNDREDS OF DAZZLING VINTAGE SHEET MUSIC COVERS FROM 1896-1923 DIGITALLY RESTORED TO THEIR ORIGINAL GLORY!After the American Civil War people were looking for ways to entertain themselves at home, and as a result, piano sales went through the roof, with more than 25,000 pianos being sold every year. By 1887 more than half a million young people were studying the piano. The immense interest in piano music generated a need for sheet music of the most popular songs of the time, and by 1910, thirty million sheet music copies were being sold every year. At the same time, advances in printing technology allowed publishers to print high-quality art images on their sheet music covers, which acted as an advertisement for the sheet music. Publishers discovered that people would buy sheet music just because they liked the cover, even if they weren’t familiar with the song. Displayed on a piano, the sheet music cover functioned as decorative art when not being used to play a song. The sheet music covers of this period employed a variety of subject matter, but images of beautiful women proved to be the most popular, and the art created for these covers proved to be one of the highest forms of commercial art produced during that period of time. It also created a great opportunity for talented artists, providing them with a substantial and lucrative market for their art. The covers in this book have been organized according to ten different themes and include a large selection of ragtime songs, which was enjoying immense popularity during this time. Other themes include songs about soldiers and songs about mothers. One chapter includes a large selection of covers that feature beautiful women. But my personal favorite is the collection of songs with zany names, like ”I’ve Got a Pain in My Sawdust.”In the back of this ebook you’ll find an Index of Songs, with many of the titles linked to a YouTube page where you can listen to the song.

The Eras The Baroque Story

by Gisel Costa

The Eras: The Baroque Story is an innovative and interactive book that empowers children with the understanding of practice. This is a children’s historical book that introduces music, art, and literature during the Baroque Period. Baroque history was a wonderful time for the arts. Student Zoe finds a Baroque book her teacher left behind. She then reads it to her siblings and friends. Children are introduced to three classical musical composers during that time. She reads that through their dedication, the composers wrote over hundreds of classical pieces that are still played today. This piece brings out artists such as Poussin, Caravaggio, Rubens, and Rembrandt, who also contributed so much of their works through practice. This manuscript may appeal to children who show an interest in the fine arts. There is also a coloring section to enhance learning. This is a great piece for children taking extracurricular activities such as music and art.

Guitar Set Up Know How: The knowledge of how to make your guitar sound better and easier to play.

by Paul Gilbertson

(Guitar) String Theory gives guitar players all they need to know about how to makes an electric guitar play better, sound better, and make us better guitar players. Poorly set up instruments are difficult to play and generate a sound and tone that are a poor reward for hard work. Yet most guitars would sound and play infinitely better with a little adjustment, so it’s good to know how but also why adjustments are made. This book explains those hows and whys, a clear explanation of the theory and design of an electric guitar which will enable the reader to diagnose and improve a guitars performance. The fundamental of the book is that the primary function of an electric guitar is not to produce sound, but to produce string vibration. A guitars’ quality therefore is determined solely by its ability to produce and maintain quality string vibration.(Guitar) String Theory defines and explains The Three Principals; Vibration, Structure and Tuning which we can apply to any guitar in order to optimise both its sound and its playability.Knowledge is power. The Super Cluster Method For Guitar: A Full Knowledge Of The Fretboard

by Daniel D. Barber

One hour to learn the fretboard. That's all it takes.By the end of the fourth lesson of this method, usually an hour or less, the student has essentially learned the entire fretboard and will know the location of six out of the seven natural tones of the C major scale. A fifth lesson adds the last note and the sixth lesson helps the student cement the knowledge into their mind. This method works equally well for children as it does for adults and for older guitar players who have yet to 'memorize' the fretboard.Additionally, this method frees the student from the limiting factors of the various other methods of learning scales. Now they are no longer limited by a four or five fret horizon like found in the CAGED or Zone systems.

by Debra Newby

A Musical Adventure With Song Patterns and Free Online Audio Tracks! !To begin a new adventure, an explorer needs a map. Many individuals would like to start a musical journey, but the inability to read musical notation holds them back. This Music Pattern Song Book was created to give those brave souls a place to begin. It’s Easy! All one needs to do is match the color blocks or letters in these musical song patterns to an instrument, and beautiful music can be made. This book works well with xylophones, glockenspiels, recorders, hand bells, piano and more! Any instrument that can play an eight-note C to C scale can be used with this book. Fingering Charts for the recorder and piano are included. All of this book’s song patterns are color-coded AND letter-coded, so as long as you know the fingering for the notes of your instrument, you can play along. In these song patterns, it is illuminating to see a visual representation of the sounds that you hear. Each song has structure and repeating patterns, but each one is unique. If you are a student of music theory, these colored patterns may give you a new perspective on the way music is put together.A Place to Begin! Many parents and classroom teachers feel unequipped to teach the next generation about music because they had little opportunity to learn themselves. Sometimes, older adults who missed the chance to play an instrument when they were younger are determined to begin. Music therapists are often looking for tools to bring music to their patients. Children delight in banging the keys of a percussion instrument but need some help to know what to do next.Yet, where does one who has not yet learned to read musical notation begin? Most people can match colors or letters, which makes color and letter coded music song patterns a good place to start. In this book, the songs progress from easy children’s tunes to more complicated pieces and duets.Duets are included so that groups can make music together! How To Make Money As A Touring Musician: (Or ANY Touring Performer)

by Larry Whitler

When the passion to create music first appears it is usually about the music and not about the money that can be made from it. In fact, for many, making money with music is not even necessary. Many musicians, singers, and songwriters have led very happy lives bringing their music to the public for the simple joy of it. If this is you, then that is awesome and you don't need this book. If, however, you have been making music and have been playing in small bars or coffee houses waiting for that "big break" while taking home tips or a small stipend AND you would like to be able to earn a better income while waiting for that break, then this book might have the practical tips (and connections) that could make a big difference for you. This is not a "get rich quick" with music book. This is also not a "how to become famous" book. This book gives sensible guidance to help independent musicians navigate their way through the college market. It is recommended for those who are not obligated to a family because the information in this book is definitely geared toward the idea of touring which, by its nature, means that road trips will become a way of life.I know because I did this for three years. They were three of the most fun and rewarding years of my life. I was young, I drove a 1972 Chevy Nova, and I made much more money doing that than I had in the years before discovering the college market.Again, don't buy this book as a guide to becoming famous or even rich, for that matter. There are lots of books, videos, and other clues out there to help guide you in those areas. This book is a short narrative to help working performers onto the campuses of colleges all across the U.S. so that their music might be heard and they might be paid a fair amount for their talents.Larry Whitler - Author (and former touring musician)

All You Need To Know About Ludwig Van Beethoven: The Exceptional Life Of The Legendary Composer Ludwig Van Beethoven

by George Hanson

Ludwig van Beethoven, (baptized December 17, 1770, Bonn, archbishopric of Cologne [Germany]—died March 26, 1827, Vienna,Austria), German composer, the predominant musical figure in thetransitional period between the Classical and Romantic eras.Widely regarded as the greatest composer who ever lived, Ludwigvan Beethoven dominates a period of musical history as no oneelse before or since. Rooted in the Classical traditions of JosephHaydn and Mozart, his art reaches out to encompass the new spiritof humanism and incipient nationalism expressed in the worksof Goethe and Friedrich von Schiller, his elder contemporaries inthe world of literature; the stringently redefined moral imperatives ofKant; and the ideals of the French Revolution, with its passionateconcern for the freedom and dignity of the individual. He revealedmore vividly than any of his predecessors the power of music toconvey a philosophy of life without the aid of a spoken text; and incertain of his compositions is to be found the strongest assertion ofthe human will in all music, if not in all art. Though not himself aRomantic, he became the fountainhead of much that characterizedthe work of the Romantics who followed him, especially in his idealof program or illustrative music, which he defined in connection withhis Sixth (Pastoral) Symphony as “more an expression of emotionthan painting.” In musical form he was a considerable innovator, widening the scope of sonata, symphony, concerto, and quartet, while in the Ninth Symphony he combined the worlds of vocal andinstrumental music in a manner never before attempted. Hispersonal life was marked by a heroic struggleagainst encroaching deafness, and some of his most importantworks were composed during the last 10 years of his life when hewas quite unable to hear. In an age that saw the decline of courtand church patronage, he not only maintained himself from the saleand publication of his works but also was the first musician toreceive a salary with no duties other than to compose how andwhen he felt inclined.

Garage Band Theory – GBTool 08 Chord Progressions: excerpt from Garage Band Theory: Tools the Pros Use to Play by Ear (Garage Band Theory - Tools the Pro's Use to Play by Ear Book 9)

by Duke Sharp

Everything in this book came from Garage Band Theory and there's loads more useful stuff there.

When I first started trying to explain how people can play songs by ear, this is where I began.

I thought that if a player understands that the vast majority of the music we hear is based around about five patterns, which are called chord progressions, and then they learn those patterns they'd be off and running.

Not a bad idea, but what happened is that the student would not really know exactly what a chord is, which has to be explained in the context of a scale... and they wouldn't know what a scale is ... and so on. Turns out this is one of those times that a coherent explanation can't really start in the middle.

But the basic premise is absolutely true. There are only a few chord progressions that can be thought of as the foundation for nearly all the music you'll ever hear, and they're rather simple. And they're all here.

When you learn to recognize chord progressions ... musical patterns ... it becomes quite easy to anticipate the 'next' chord.

When you're doing that, you're playing 'by ear.'

There are plenty of examples and chord diagrams that will let you get right into playing all these tunes and a quiz at the end so you can measure your progress.

Because he is both an accomplished musician and teacher, Sharp's Garage Band Theory is an excellent guide for beginners and more advanced players alike." Sam Barry, author, musician
