Don't Stop Believing: An Upbeat, Musical Journey (Jukebox Musicals Book 1)

by Rowanna Green

A failing marriage. A union separated by distance. An accidental encounter. Can the Edinburgh Fringe Festival work its magic?Kathy’s life is a mess. Sure, the job’s great and her home is to-die-for, but she spends way too much time on the midnight train to catch a few fraught hours with her musician husband, Jimmy. While he’s away, Dan-next-door looks dangerously attractive. On paper, Jimmy has it all. A talented wife, a successful rock band and nights in smart hotels. The gig at Edinburgh’s hottest arts festival is the culmination of years on the road, but the lack of harmony in his marriage makes him feel like a failure. He and Kathy fight to stay together, but events conspire to break them apart as they interact with colourful characters drawn to the Fringe. In this rock-music-inspired tale, three love stories intertwine as each player is forced to take stock of their lives and discover what is truly important.

Garage Band Theory – GBTool 14 Eleven Variations on a Twelve Bar Blues: excerpt from Garage Band Theory - Tools the Pro's Use to Play by Ear

by Duke Sharp

Eleven Variations on a 12 Bar Blues
(or how to make the blues into jazz

Everything in this book came from Garage Band Theory and there's loads more useful stuff there.
Basic blues is not complex, just three chords and lots of emotion.

It's also possible to develop a blues progression into a deep study of advanced jazz chords and how they work together, and you'll find diagrams for 19 different chords used in the example.

Then, to twist it a little further you'll learn to use what's called 'half-step substitution' to add more chords to the basic blues progression.

Another very common progression that turns up in blues, jazz (and just about everywhere else) is the Two-Five-One, and you'll find examples in 2 keys. There's a new bunch of chord diagrams to get you started, and since none of the chords shown use open strings, you can easily transpose them.

Since the theme here is jazz, I also included a few standards that are nothing but fun to play.

The guitar tabs show how to move through these tunes using triads all over the neck, and in any sort of band situation with several instruments, it's often really useful to know how to use 2 and 3 note chords. This will get you off to a nice start.

As a bonus, there's diagrams for all the chords you're ever likely to need for both guitar and mandolin.

This is non Academic, practical, useful theory for living-room pickers and working musicians who want to be able to think coherently about music in order to ask questions and understand answers about the music they want to play.

The stuff in GBT is about understanding The Beatles and The Rolling Stones,  Cole Porter and Duke Ellington, The Grateful Dead and Vampire Weekend.

It's NOT about analyzing Bach Fugues... but you'll be able to if you want to.

It was written for the 99% of musicians who are NOT music majors by a incorrigible honky-tonk guitar player who plays by ear ... but understands the relevant vocabulary and what's sensible and useful for MOST players.

"Garage Band Theory is a must for any musician." Rodney Crowell

"Don't be put off by this giant book - Duke's got the secrets of the universe in here. Quite simply, this is the most comprehensive book on music theory I've ever seen."
Bill Payne (Little Feat)

"Something for every musician at any level. Especially helpful is the musical notation and tablature for a variety of instruments. This book inspires me to learn and practice more."
Sam Bush

"Garage Band Theory is a veritable encyclopedia of useful tools and tips. This book lifts the lid off the "black box" of music theory and let's the light shine in - and in a fun, practical way.
This is a book which should be left handily lying around the living room, bedside, studio, classroom, (restroom?) - ready to be dipped into at any time for reference purposes or just to improve or refresh one's fluency in the language of music.
A great resource for musicians young and old no matter what your training. For the price of a one-hour lesson, GBT offers a lifetime of learning."
Alasdair Fraser

"Garage Band Theory let me know how little I know... but in a good way.  It's a great book!" Sterling C Ball CEO, Ernie Ball Inc.

"This book is written in the people's key." Kostas

"Garage Band Theory offers you everything you need to know to understand, play and make your own music. Because he is both an accomplished musician and teacher, Sharp's Garage Band Theory is an excellent guide for beginners and more advanced players alike." Sam Barry, author, musician

No matter which instrument you want to play, the advice, inspiration and down-to-earth tips in this book will help you get to your goal.

Duke Sharp draws on a lifetime of experience playing, writing, recording and teaching music.

Garage Band Theory demystifies music theory and, in the process, shows how to apply basic music theory to the art of playing by ear and composition.

Garage Band Theory – GBTool 15 Bending Bach and Beethoven: excerpt from Garage Band Theory - Tools the Pro's Use to Play by Ear

by Duke Sharp

JS Bach composed over 1100 works that we're sure of before his death at 65 in 1750.

Ludwig van Beethoven started to lose his hearing in his mid-twenties, yet composed nearly 800 works before his death at 57 in 1827.

I suspect that there are very few composers alive today who will be remembered two hundred years from now with such reverence and respect as these two.

The two Bach pieces are on my regular set list, but I don't play either one exactly the way Mr. Bach would. So while you'll find correct transcriptions of both, with tab for guitar, you'll also find a couple of different ways to approach these two classics and they're tabbed for mandolin as well as guitar.

These are really fun to play as guitar/mando duets, and there's a version of Gavotte in A Minor I recorded with Mike Parsons on "Two Grass Crew, Gavotte in A Minor"

Check YouTube for Leo Kottke playing Bach's Bouree in E Minor and Jethro Tull doing a reely kewl swing blues version.

I haven't learned Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata well enough to play in public, but it's one I enjoy listening to and fooling around with. I included one version that's easy for guitar in the key of A minor, with two sets of tabs.

But I also had to include a banjo tab because I just LOVE Bela Fleck's version. Sounds like a joke, Beethoven on a Banjo, but there's nothing funny about the way Bela and company deliver this one.

Willpower: Growth Mindset and Mind Discipline to reach your Personal Success

by Lewis Fischer

On the Cantatas of J.S. Bach: Trinity VIII-XVI (The Bach Cantatas Book 2)

by Hendrik Slegtenhorst

Bach the composer, like many of us today, contends with fundamental human concerns such as self-worth, the courage of trust, the acceptance of death, satisfaction with life, the hope found in joy, suffering amidst the essential beauty of the world, the misery of loss, and the majesty of redemption.Trinity VIII through XVI, the second third of the Trinity Sundays and feast days, occurs in late July to early October in the Lutheran liturgical year. The nine topics of the human condition that these Trinity cantatas principally dwell upon encompass (1) mortal hypocrisy, (2) spiritual weakness and failure (3) the destruction of man’s innate divinity, (4) defeating unworthiness, (5) the covenant of life, (6) the golden rule, (7) the source of love, (8) mastering troubles, and (9) the alliance of death and unification. There is a profound interrelationship among all art, an interrelationship that is parallel to the natural one our bodies dwell in. Determining, and thus causing, one’s own thoughts creates one’s own experience of reality; and the more this is so, the more one is free. This is not the Western freedom of choice—where to live, what to read, what to select—but a freedom dependent upon awareness of one’s desires and aspirations. It is often difficult for a non-religious thinker in today’s world to penetrate feelingly and with conviction and psychological trust into the works of the religious; and it is equally difficult for the religious to put in abeyance their current beliefs in order to let another’s religious experience, perhaps even one that is antithetical or contrary to their own, enhance and expand their understanding of how the spiritual and the mystical can work in ways that are valid, even if not, to them, theologically supportable or acceptable.

Middlebrow Modernism: Britten’s Operas and the Great Divide (California Studies in 20th-Century Music Book 24)

by Christopher Chowrimootoo

At publication date, a free ebook version of this title will be available through Luminos, University of California Press’s Open Access publishing program. Visit www.luminosoa.org to learn more. Situated at the intersections of twentieth-century music history, historiography, and aesthetics, Middlebrow Modernism uses Benjamin Britten’s operas to illustrate the ways in which composers, critics, and audiences mediated the “great divide” between modernism and mass culture. Reviving mid-century discussions of the middlebrow, Christopher Chowrimootoo demonstrates how Britten’s works allowed audiences to have their modernist cake and eat it: to revel in the pleasures of consonance, lyricism, and theatrical spectacle even while enjoying the prestige that came from rejecting them. By focusing on moments when reigning aesthetic oppositions and hierarchies threatened to collapse, this study offers a powerful model for recovering shades of grey in the traditionally black-and-white historiographies of twentieth-century music.

Garage Band Theory – GBTool 05 Major & Minor Chords: excerpt from Garage Band Theory: Tools the Pros Use to Play by Ear (Garage Band Theory - Tools the Pro's Use to Play by Ear Book 6)

by Duke Sharp

Lots of people can play a handful of chords, and that's enough to play lots and lots of fine music.

When I was teaching, it was always interesting to me how few of those people actually KNOW what a chord is and how they're built.

Lots of folks can play an E chord, no problem, most can not begin to explain what it is.

Chords aren't for everybody, virtually none of the instruments in an orchestra or marching band use them.

But a good understanding of chord structure, where they come from, and why they're called what they're called is useful stuff for everyone.

We start the way most people do, looking at the open chords on a guitar, then move to inversions and triads.

It's excellent ear training, because when you can easily distinguish the difference between major and minor chords, that's the first step to recognizing all the others ... major 6 and minor 6, major, minor and dominant 7th ... etc. When you can recognize a sound for what it is and know where it came from, it's fairly easy to reproduce it.

There are lots of examples and simple songs. There are exercises designed to get your chords flowing smoothly and a quiz at the end so you can measure your progress. (use a separate sheet of paper for your answers)

Quickstart Guides: Modes

by Graham Tippett

This book is for anyone who wants to get modes up and running on the guitar fretboard with the minimum amount of fuss and without long-winded theory explanations. What you’ll find here is the theory you NEED to know to get modes going, plus a system to access any mode in any key on the fretboard WITHOUT learning endless scale patterns or permutations. This is not a quick-fix solution, you’ll need to put the time in, but I’ll show you exactly what and how to practice so that you’re not wasting a second.Essentially, the theory of modes is quite simple, the problems arise when we try to transfer that theory to the guitar neck and apply it to our playing. This book aims to make the transition from theory to practice a smooth and effortless one so that you can get into modes in a matter of hours.

The Values of Independent Hip-Hop in the Post-Golden Era: Hip-Hop’s Rebels

by Christopher Vito

Utilizing a mixed-methods approach, this book uncovers the historical trajectory of U.S. independent hip-hop in the post-golden era, seeking to understand its complex relationship to mainstream hip-hop culture and U.S. culture more generally.  Christopher Vito analyzes the lyrics of indie hip-hop albums from 2000-2013 to uncover the dominant ideologies of independent artists regarding race, class, gender, sexual orientation, and social change. These analyses inform interviews with members of the indie hip-hop community to explore the meanings that they associate with the culture today, how technological and media changes impact the boundaries between independent and major, and whether and how this shapes their engagement with oppositional consciousness. Ultimately, this book aims to understand the complex and contradictory cultural politics of independent hip-hop in the contemporary age.

Garage Band Theory - GBTool 04 Scales: excerpt from Garage Band Theory: Tools the Pros Use to Play by Ear (Garage Band Theory - Tools the Pro's Use to Play by Ear Book 5)

by Duke Sharp

Why would anyone practice scales? When you could wash windows or scrub walls or visit the dentist instead?

It's partly for the same reason athletes work out... to be quicker, more flexible, develop stamina.

When an athlete is in good condition everything is easier. And daily exercise keeps them in shape for whatever the game happens to be at the moment, whether it's basketball, rugby or water polo, they're probably gonna be able to find a spot and contribute.

Same thing goes for musicians. Jazz, bluegrass, rock or reggae, when you don't have to overcome physical obstacles, you can play it all.

It really works. It doesn't happen overnight. Or even in a month. But it works.

Basic major scale practice may also be the best ear training tool there is, since all the chords you'll ever learn are derived from this scale as well as the vast majority of melodies here in the western world.

And you'll suddenly be able to understand and even locate those complicated chords. Things like C# minor 7 flat 5 will easily understood. On any instrument. They're all the same, only difference is mechanical, physical.

Plus, when you've been practicing them daily for just a little while, you'll find you can do them without looking at your hand ... listening to what you play instead of watching your fingers wiggle ... and that's exactly what you want to do as much as possible.

Start today.

And, although he had managed to put the horrors of his youth behind him in order to find success as a musician, the memories of his past still haunted him.
When outspoken, vivacious college student, Casey Caldwell, was paired with the famously, reserved rockstar for a friend’s wedding, she was prepared for the worst. What would they possibly have in common? She was a bubbly talker. He was a reclusive loner. His life was filled with music. She couldn’t carry a tune. She lived a happy childhood. His was a well-publicized nightmare.
Jake spent the majority of his life on the road, touring and performing. He didn’t have the time for a girlfriend. And really, with the hate that raged through him, Jake truly didn’t believe that he had the capacity to fall in love. Quick, impersonal romps were the extent of his love life. Then he met Casey…and it was as if her light balanced out his darkness.
But Jake’s lasting injuries, and his refusal to discuss the crime that shaped his young life, threatened to bury their budding relationship under layers of debris. Would their love be strong enough to survive the weight of his tragic past?

Book Excerpt:
Jake looked closer at me now like he was really seeing me for the first time. “Sorry, what was your name again?”
“Casey…Caldwell,” I said holding my hand out to shake his then added jokingly, “I didn’t catch your name either?”
Jake took my hand then grinned and said, “Hi, I’m Jake McKallister.”
“Nice to meet you Jake McKallister. You know there is a cure for that?”
“For what?”
“Not remembering someone’s name.”
Jake smiled, looking interested. “Oh yeah, what is the cure?”
“Pay attention the first time,” I smiled deviously.
Jake gave me that killer stare and he smiled. “Yeah…I definitely should have paid better attention. Sorry. It won’t happen again, Casey Caldwell.”
I smiled.
“So what do you do Casey?”
“I am a student at Arizona State.”
“Really? That’s cool.”
“Not as cool as being a rockstar but, yeah, it is right up there on the list,” I joked. “Rockstar, astronaut, brain surgeon…student at ASU.”
“Yeah that is how the list goes,” Jake nodded, smirking.
“I might have left out a few professions,” I teased.
“Yeah, maybe just a few,” Jake smiled then raised an eyebrow and asked mischievously, “So Casey…isn’t ASU the #1 party school in the nation or something like that?”
“I think it might actually be in the world, but go ahead and minimize our accomplishments…whatever,” I joked in mock annoyance.
“I didn’t mean to sell your school short.”
“It’s okay. It is a common error,” I teased.
Jake grinned and his eyes twinkled with mischief, “So?”
“So, what?” I demanded, with just the right amount of flirt back.
“Are you a party girl?”
I laughed out loud. “Seriously? Way to stereotype, rockstar.”
Then it was Jake’s turn to laugh out loud. He seemed impressed with my retort. “Yeah, who am I to talk, right?”
I nodded laughing. “And to answer your question…I know I seem super cool and everything but I am actually kind of a nerd.”
Jake looked me up and down appreciatively and said, “You don’t look like any nerd I have ever seen.”
Ahh…swoon.
“Well, this might sway you…I’m an accounting major.”
“Shut up!” He exclaimed in surprise. “Accounting?”
I nodded, smiling.
“Damn, you are a nerd!” He joked.
“Before you assume I am totally boring I will say that I may have dabbled a bit in the party scene from time to time.”
“You being boring was the furthest thing from my mind.”
I grinned. Another compliment? He seemed to be enjoying my company. What were the chances? Jake stared down at me with a charming smile. Damn…he was so beautiful to look at that I almost felt like apologizing for gazing upon him.
