Presenting: The Professor's Guide to Powerful Communication

by Norman Eng

“I want my presentation to blow the audience away.”“I hate when people text-message during my presentations.”“I don’t want to be like all the other presenters. These are the actual words that presenters, particularly college faculty, use when asked about their PowerPoint goals and challenges. They do presentations all the time—in the classrooms, at conferences, and during workshops—yet they rarely learn to communicate effectively.Bottom line: Isn't that what presentations are supposed to do? Create impact through our words and our slides? In a way that get audiences to go: Wow. That was clear and to the point. I want that professor for all my lectures. I never thought about the topic this way. I’m going to Google more about it. I’m going to email this presenter . . . and maybe collaborate!PRESENTING. The Professor’s Guide to Powerful Communication will show you:•One simple test to see if your existing presentation slides are any good •How documentaries (yes—documentaries!) present information more effectively than most of us•A proven format to engage audiences (Hint: don’t introduce technical terms up front) •How to deal with the chronic issue of “I have too much to cover!” •How to create captivating slides—without a degree in designJust like his other widely-read book, Teaching College: The Ultimate Guide to Lecturing, Presenting, and Engaging Students, Dr. Norman Eng’s PRESENTING. is based on the latest research in media & communication, design, education, and neuroscience. More importantly, it gives college educators—novices and veterans alike—the confidence to move any audience, no matter their topic or venue.

Entity-Oriented Search (The Information Retrieval Series Book 39)

by Krisztian Balog

This open access book covers all facets of entity-oriented search—where “search” can be interpreted in the broadest sense of information access—from a unified point of view, and provides a coherent and comprehensive overview of the state of the art. It represents the first synthesis of research in this broad and rapidly developing area. Selected topics are discussed in-depth, the goal being to establish fundamental techniques and methods as a basis for future research and development. Additional topics are treated at a survey level only, containing numerous pointers to the relevant literature. A roadmap for future research, based on open issues and challenges identified along the way, rounds out the book. The book is divided into three main parts, sandwiched between introductory and concluding chapters. The first two chapters introduce readers to the basic concepts, provide an overview of entity-oriented search tasks, and present the various types and sources of data that will be used throughout the book. Part I deals with the core task of entity ranking: given a textual query, possibly enriched with additional elements or structural hints, return a ranked list of entities. This core task is examined in a number of different variants, using both structured and unstructured data collections, and numerous query formulations. In turn, Part II is devoted to the role of entities in bridging unstructured and structured data. Part III explores how entities can enable search engines to understand the concepts, meaning, and intent behind the query that the user enters into the search box, and how they can provide rich and focused responses (as opposed to merely a list of documents)—a process known as semantic search. The final chapter concludes the book by discussing the limitations of current approaches, and suggesting directions for future research.Researchers and graduate students are the primary target audience of this book. A general background in information retrieval is sufficient to follow the material, including an understanding of basic probability and statistics concepts as well as a basic knowledge of machine learning concepts and supervised learning algorithms.

Quality of Service in Modern Packet Networks

by Gary Hallberg

As network applications converge onto a common packet-based infrastructure, delivering Quality of Service for real time traffic has become a critical part of network design. IP and Ethernet based networks, by their very nature, are not best suited to deliver Quality of Service and over the years, there have been many initiatives to address the fundamental issues. This book looks at the differences between packet based and circuit switched networks and the challenges network designers face when migrating applications from circuit switched technologies to packet based infrastructures. This book covers all the relevant topics, which include key Quality of Service models such as Integrated Services and Differentiated Services. Layer 2 Ethernet based services are becoming ever more popular in the service provider domain and so this book comprehensively covers the subject of traffic classification, congestion management, queueing and scheduling at both Layer 2 and Layer 3 in the enterprise and service provider domains. This book also covers traditional and modern Traffic Engineering technologies such as IP MPLS, MPLS-TP and Segment Routing. With network evolving to SDN and API controlled infrastructures, it is important to touch on new technologies such as SD-WAN and how Quality of Service is delivered in SD-WAN environments, as they have the potential to challenge traditional routed networks.Engineering Quality of Service into a network infrastructure is key to delivering real time applications such as voice and video, but in the service provider domain especially, networks will also need a comprehensive set of tools to measure Quality of Service against a defined Service Level Agreement. Therefore, this book also covers in detail the available Quality of Service measurement technologies.Written for the novice and network professional alike, this book is an invaluable reference for this fascinating, complex and critical subject.

'Bluetooth Tutorial: Design, Protocol and Specifications for BLE - Bluetooth Low Energy 4.0 and Bluetooth 5' starts from the ground up for a new user and does a gradual progression into the technical details around Bluetooth technology. The latest update adds information about Bluetooth 4.0 also known as Bluetooth Low Energy(BLE) and Bluetooth 5.0. IntroductionBluetooth is the name given to a new technology standard using short-range radio links, intended to replace the cables) connecting portable and/or fixed electronic devices. The standard defines a uniform structure for a wide range of devices to communicate with each other, with minimal user effort. Bluetooth key features are robustness, low complexity, low power and low cost. The technology also offers wireless access to LANs, PSTN, the mobile phone network and the Internet for a host of home appliances and portable handheld interfaces. The immediate need for Bluetooth came from the desire to connect peripherals and devices without cables. The available technology-IrDA OBEX (Infrared Data Association Object Exchange Protocol) is based in infrared links that are limited to line of sight connections. Bluetooth is further fueled by the demand for mobile and wireless access to LANs, Internet over mobile and other existing networks, where the backbone is wired but the interface is free to move. This not only makes the network easier to use but also extends its reach.
