The White Eyed Ghost's Promise (Book 1): Herobrine Lives (An Unofficial Minecraft Book for Kids Ages 9 - 12 (Preteen)

by Mark Mulle

GENRE: Children’s Adventure

(An Unofficial Minecraft Book for Kids Ages 9 - 12 (Preteen)

James was just like a lot of 20 year old gamers, tired of the number of games that didn’t keep him engaged. While scrolling through YouTube, passed all the adorable cat videos and fail compilation videos, he came across the sub-genre of “Let’s Play” videos. He immediately fell in love with a YouTuber who began a play through of the game Minecraft. So when James found out he had won a unique character skin by being the 30 Millionth Minecraft user to buy a copy of the game, he couldn’t wait to sit down and begin his second life building and living in a world made up entirely of his own imagination. Everything seemed normal enough until he logged in for the first time and noticed that his personal gameplay would be much more sinister than he had watched online. Through some error James was awarded the character skin of Herobrine. Thought to be an urban legend created to scare away younger players, he appeared in James’ world and began to torment him in, and out of, the game.

After making James promise to never play the game again, Herobrine seemed to move on and left him alone. However, James had spent so long watching the videos that he couldn’t stand to just be an outside observer anymore, he had finally gotten a taste for the game and needed to play more for himself. So, breaking the promise he made to Herobrine, James reentered the world, unknowingly risking the lives of all the other characters on his server. After banding together with the other players to hold back Herobrine’s initial attack and save their server, James formed an unlikely bond with the villagers of Gilesh. But even though they were able to thwart one attack, how would they fend against another? Will James be able to save himself and his new friends, or will he become just another one of the many forgotten characters that will fall in the wake of Herobrine’s reign of terror.

Amanda Lester and the Pink Sugar Conspiracy (Amanda Lester, Detective Book 1)

by Paula Berinstein

Twelve-year-old Amanda Lester wouldn’t be caught dead going into the family business. Just because she’s related to Inspector G. Lestrade, that bumbler who sometimes worked with master sleuth Sherlock Holmes, doesn’t mean she should become a detective and give up her dream of becoming a filmmaker.

Unfortunately, her plans are in jeopardy. Her latest project with the Stick Dog Filmmakers Club and Production Company isn’t coming together, and her control freak tendencies have driven away all her actors. If she doesn’t make a winning film soon, her parents will insist that she go into the L.A.P.D. young cadets training program, and her budding career will be over.

So when Herb and Lila Lester suddenly send her to a secret English school for the descendants of famous detectives, Amanda resists—until she and her new friends notice drops of blood and weird pink substances in odd places. Are these strange happenings clues to a real mystery or simply part of the elaborate class project the teachers assign every year?

The answer comes all too soon. When Amanda’s father disappears and the school’s cook is found dead with her head in a bag of sugar, the kids are certain that crimes are taking place. Now Amanda must embrace her destiny and uncover the truth. The only snag is that arch-villain Blixus Moriarty, a descendant of Holmes’s nemesis Professor James Moriarty, might be involved, and he doesn’t like nosy little girls interfering in his business.

Corporate Lobotomies: Astounding Bureaucratic Adventures, Volume 1

by Stephen Donald Huff

Corporate lobotomies. Psychotically amorous semi-sentient bots. Endless corridors. Countless unlabeled doors, all viciously locked. A lethally dysfunctional social infrastructure rife with corruption, inefficiency, and crime. Spiraling homicide rates… Welcome to your corpulent, overpopulated future! Here, everyone loves you, because everyone wants to screw you before they sell your living body to illegal pharmaceutical tumor-farms, which are also a popular method of suicide, because death-by-tumor is not as bad as many (though it is also worse than some). In this world, a much-hated dumbass-of-a-scientist long ago determined the universe would always expand faster than the pace of technological advancement. The result? Every human being on the planet knows nobody will ever, ever, ever (three evers) bust free of this crappy solar system. Combine this discouraging news with an ever-lengthening lifespan, and you get fifty-billion dysfunctional, bored-out-of-their-mind psychotics with nothing better to do than fixate on you as the object of their destruction. Good luck, and have a nice day!

Uncanny Valley

by C.A. Gray

Rebecca Cordeaux knows exactly what her future will hold: she will marry Andy, her crush of the last five years. Once Andy is ready to settle down, she’s sure he will discover that she is his soulmate. After several small parts on stage, Rebecca knows she can become a renowned actress. Her writing also shows promise as a future author. Robots perform most human jobs that can be automated, leaving many free to pursue their personal creative interests. But Rebecca's mother Karen fears the new world of robots, and insists her brilliant daughter join a university research team, studying the hazards of a complete robotic economy. Rebecca's father Quentin was obsessed with the subject to a degree that even her mother considered absurd, prior to his untimely death. So long as she can reserve enough of her time to pursue her true passions on the side, Rebecca half-heartedly agrees to join the research team, if only to please her widowed mother. There she joins a post-doc named Liam, whose conspiracy theories rival even those of her late father. Liam is convinced that world Republic leader William Halpert’s worldwide challenge for researchers to develop synthetic creativity will lead not to the promised utopia, in which every kind of human suffering has been eradicated, but rather to an apocalypse. Rebecca, whose best friend is her own companion bot Madeline, writes Liam off as a bot-hating conspiracy theorist, just like her father was… until she learns that her father’s death might not have been due to mere happenstance. With Liam’s help, Rebecca learns of an underground organization known as The Renegades, where Quentin Cordeaux was considered a legend. While Liam attempts to stop Halpert’s challenge if he can, Rebecca tries to unravel the mystery of what happened to her father. Did he and many of his contemporaries die for something they knew? Who is the mysterious informant who calls himself John Doe, and only seems to want to drive her out of harm’s way? And if Halpert’s challenge is answered, will it usher in a brave new chapter in humanity’s history… or were Quentin Cordeaux’s dire predictions right all along?
