Dignity in the 21st Century: Middle East and West (SpringerBriefs in Philosophy)

by Doris Schroeder and Abol‐Hassan Bani-Sadr

This book is open access under a CC BY license. This book offers a unique and insightful analysis of Western and Middle Eastern concepts of dignity and illustrates them with examples of everyday life.Dignity in the 21st Century - Middle East and West is unique and insightful for a range of reasons. Second, the ambition of the book is to use examples from everyday life and fiction to debate a range of dignity interpretations supplemented by philosophical and theological theories. Thus, the book is designed to be accessible to a general readership, which is further facilitated because it is publi...

Tao Thoughts

by Arran Scott and James Legge

The Tao is one of the World's oldest philosophical texts. Its origins are largely unknown, its language is open to varied interpretations and its verses touch on many subjects: all of which makes it a perfect vehicle to examine our own thoughts on these matters.
Often, the thoughts and beliefs that drive people's behaviour and form their character, remain a mystery, even to themselves. If most people were asked to describe what their beliefs and attitudes were to the things that really matter in life, they might well find themselves in unfamiliar territory. Not only is it strange for us to have to list what we think of as the key issues in life, but to then, unaided, have to define what are thoughts are on those issues, is not easy.
Some people might respond to the questio...

Asa Di War: The Sikh Ballad of Hope

by Nidhi Singh

Asa di War is the Sikh ballad of hope. Along with the Japji Sahib, it is a part of Nitnem or morning service of devout Sikhs. It is usually sung in religious congregations by minstrels at dawn to the tune of the ode to Tunde Asraja, a popular king of the days of Guru Nanak. To learn the Asa di War is a sacred obligation of all god-loving Sikhs.
Found on pages 462-475 of Guru Granth Sahib, Asa di Wâr is one of the scripture's 22 Wârs (odes). Sung in the ambrosial hours, it is set in Raag Asa, a musical measure intended to evoke an intense mood of hope or desire.
It consists of 24 Pauris, which can be envisaged as "rungs of a ladder" on which an idea is unfolded, step-by-step. Guru Nanak mostly composed the Wâr. Chanting the War will guide the Gur Sikh on the path to moksha, a...

Many Leaves, One Tree: A Collection of Aphorisms Inspired by the Tao Te Ching

by Kenneth P. Langer

The Tao Te Ching, or the Book of the Way of Virtue is an ancient and venerable Chinese text that may date back as far as the 4th century BC. Its simple yet profound words have been an inspiration to countless generations of artists, writers and thinkers; its ideas are so basic yet so deep that they can be related to most any activity or pursuit. Yet, its original audience was to the emperors of that ancient time and not the general populace.I, too, was inspired by the Tao Te Ching and wrote a set of aphorisms that would relate to our own postmodern condition and time. These words reflect the fundamental and universal idea that we are all connected as one....

100 Deviations: The Life and Teachings of His Holiness Sivarama Swami

by ISKCON Revival Movement

This book continues our series detailing the teachings of those claiming to be successor diksa, or initiating gurus to Srila Prabhupada, the original guru of ISKCON (International Society for Krishna Consciousness, or Hare Krishna movement).

This series provides the viewpoints of those claiming to be Srila Prabhupada’s successors, via their own words. In this way, though ISKCON’s members may argue that “we do not accept the ISKCON Revival Movement and its ritvik philosophy”, they cannot argue that they refuse to accept the words emanating from the “lotus mouths” of persons whom they accept as being as good as God.

Though this book is titled 100 Deviations: The Life and Teachings of His Holiness Sivarama Swami, readers should note that it is not that we...

It has been the most famous and influential of China's Seven Military Classics, and "for the last two thousand years it remained the most important military treatise in Asia, where even the common people knew it by name." Confucianisms for a Changing World Cultural Order (Confucian Cultures)

by Roger T. Ames and Peter D. Hershock

In a single generation, the rise of Asia has precipitated a dramatic sea change in the world’s economic and political orders. This reconfiguration is taking place amidst a host of deepening global predicaments, including climate change, migration, increasing inequalities of wealth and opportunity, that cannot be resolved by purely technical means or by seeking recourse in a liberalism that has of late proven to be less than effective. The present work critically explores how the pan-Asian phenomenon of Confucianism offers alternative values and depths of ethical commitment that cross national and cultural boundaries to provide a new response to these challenges. When searching for resources to respond to the world’s problems, we tend to look to those that are most familiar: Single acto...

Hamlet - Prince of Denmark (Wisehouse Classics Edition)

by William Shakespeare

The Analects (literally: “Edited Conversations”), also known as the Analects of Confucius, is a collection of sayings and ideas attributed to the Chinese philosopher Confucius and his contemporaries, traditionally believed to have been compiled and written by Confucius’ followers. It is believed to have been written during the Warring States period (475 BC–221 BC), and it achieved its final form during the mid-Han dynasty (206 BC–220 AD). By the early Han dynasty the Analects was considered merely a "commentary" on the Five Classics, but the status of the Analects grew to be one of the central texts of Confucianism by the end of that dynasty.During the late Song dynasty (960-1279) the importance of the Analects as a philosophy work was raised above that of the older Five Classics...
