Macbeth (AmazonClassics Edition)

by William Shakespeare

One night on the heath, the brave and respected general Macbeth encounters three witches who foretell that he will become king of Scotland. If I Could Spin

by Isabel Storey

My mother had a well-stocked shelf of volumes of poetry. By the age of 12 I had read - even if I did not understand - all she had. These ranged from Byron through to all well-known early Australians to a handful of small publications created after the Second World War. I particularly recall the cover of "The Fuzzie Wuzzie Angels" describing help given to Australian soldiers in Papua New Guinea.
However, most of the content of those works have either slipped from or never really taken root in my memory.
What I have retained is a sense of rhythm and rhyme. Sometimes the rhyme is abandoned within the rhythm and at other times the rhythm is abandoned in the rhyme. Sometimes they both come together. At all times I find joy in the release of the writing and relief in the expression...

The Tower

by Joe Joyce

One act play about James Joyce and Oliver St John Gogarty who were close friends in Dublin in the months before Joyce went into exile and were thereafter lifetime enemies. "The Tower" imagines them meeting again now in the Martello Tower beside Dublin Bay where they stayed briefly and which Joyce used as the setting for the opening scene in "Ulysses" in which he depicted Gogarty as "Buck Mulligan". The play has them discussing their relationship, art and posthumous reputations and has been critically acclaimed as well as popular with audiences....

The Importance of Being Earnest (Wisehouse Classics Edition)

by Oscar Wilde

THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST, A Trivial Comedy for Serious People is a play by Oscar Wilde. First performed on 14 February 1895 at the St James's Theatre in London, it is a farcical comedy in which the protagonists maintain fictitious personæ to escape burdensome social obligations. Working within the social conventions of late Victorian London, the play’s major themes are the triviality with which it treats institutions as serious as marriage, and the resulting satire of Victorian ways. Contemporary reviews all praised the play's humour, though some were cautious about its explicit lack of social messages, while others foresaw the modern consensus that it was the culmination of Wilde’s artistic career so far. Its high farce and witty dialogue have helped make THE IMPORTANCE OF BEI...

Pygmalion (Wisehouse Classics Edition)

by George Bernard Shaw

PYGMALION is a play by George Bernard Shaw, named after a Greek mythological character. It was first presented on stage to the public in 1913. Professor of phonetics Henry Higgins makes a bet that he can train a bedraggled Cockney flower girl, Eliza Doolittle, to pass for a duchess at an ambassador's garden party by teaching her to assume a veneer of gentility, the most important element of which, he believes, is impeccable speech. The play is a sharp lampoon of the rigid British class system of the day and a commentary on women's independence. In ancient Greek mythology, Pygmalion fell in love with one of his sculptures, which then came to life. The general idea of that myth was a popular subject for Victorian era English playwrights, including one of Shaw's influences, W. S. Gilbert, who ...

The Waste Land (Wisehouse Classics - Original Authoritative Edition)

by T. S. Eliot and Sam Vaseghi

The Waste Land is a long poem by T. S. Eliot. It is widely regarded as one of the most important poems of the 20th century and a central text in Modernist poetry. Published in 1922, the 434-line poem first appeared in the United Kingdom in the October issue of The Criterion and in the United States in the November issue of The Dial. It was published in book form in December 1922. Among its famous phrases are “April is the cruellest month”, “I will show you fear in a handful of dust”, and the mantra in the Sanskrit language “Shantih shantih shantih”.Eliot’s poem loosely follows the legend of the Holy Grail and the Fisher King combined with vignettes of contemporary British society. Eliot employs many literary and cultural allusions from the Western canon, Buddhism and the Hind...

Hamlet: The Missing Chance (Homeworker Helper Book 26)

by Sal Galvan and M.D. Jones

"Hamlet: The Missing Chance" is a collegiate essay written by Sal. Galvan. This dissertation focuses on the Shakespearean play Hamlet, and how the ultimate death and downfall of King Hamlet came about. S. Galvan argues that the reason such violence and brutality was displayed in Hamlet was because each major character like Laertes, Claudius, and Hamlet were driven by the addiction of vengeance. As each character fought for revenge, a bloody scene of gore and brutality was unleashed. This fact culminated when King Hamlet was killed.

Romeo and Juliet (Wisehouse Classics Edition)

by William Shakespeare

Romeo and Juliet is a tragedy written by William Shakespeare early in his career about two young star-crossed lovers whose deaths ultimately reconcile their feuding families. It was among Shakespeare's most popular plays during his lifetime and along with Hamlet, is one of his most frequently performed plays. Today, the title characters are regarded as archetypal young lovers.Romeo and Juliet belongs to a tradition of tragic romances stretching back to antiquity. The plot is based on an Italian tale translated into verse as The Tragical History of Romeus and Juliet by Arthur Brooke in 1562 and retold in prose in Palace of Pleasure by William Painter in 1567. Shakespeare borrowed heavily from both but expanded the plot by developing a number of supporting characters, particularly Mercutio a...
